I was there as well, and in fact at the coaches meeting. The two things they continually stressed...no cell phones or electronics, and sportsmanship, specifically no celebrations. They were very clear about that, and to relay this to our athletes that such violations would result in a DQ. I said to another coach how they were really emphasizing the whole sportsmanship thing. I hadn't realized the same type thing has happened to the same athlete three months earlier. Whether we coaches agree to the rule or not was not as relevant as whether or not it was made clear, which it was.
What does the No cell phones or electronics mean? means kids can’t race with a phone and earbuds - ok? Means fans/parents can’t film from the stands? - not ok.

Didn’t some Kenyan steeple guy run into lane 8 on the final stretch and dance at the Olympics. Along with all the other examples on this thread? Clearly the rule needs to reevaluated. NBA and NFL players scream and cheer after every point but that’s not a problem
I recall all MD officials being like 70+ probably volunteers also. If I was on the other relay teams I would protest in support. Echoing the other guy wish runningmaryland was still around.

If anyone watched the ACC outdoors champs, Judson Lincoln IV got in a clemson athletes face and started talking trash after winning the 400. That's a DQ i dont have a real problem with as he was directly taunting another athlete. Buffington is just raising his arms out to the crowd, not another athlete.
This all day. At no point did he show up or stare down any other competitor. These old white men officials need to get off their high horse. My god what a terrible dq.

I'm not quite sure why people are comparing pros to High School sports. Do things in the NBA not happen in High School basketball? Pro rules and High School rules aren't the same thing. Should it be a DQ? No, it's stupid. Is it a rule violation? Yes. Should he know better because he already did this earlier in the year? Yes.

you are racist. by the way, the official was black. you can clearly see the official in the video of him explaining it to the coaches.
for the record, I agree with the official that he should have been DQ'd.

This was already settled upthread. Celebrating is not a rules violation. He was cited for 4.6.2, not listening to an official. So, basically, the official made the rule up not to celebrate on his watch, and enforced it by citing the not listening to the official rule. Allowing the official to make up a do-not-celebrate rule is too much power to the official.

Yes we should be teaching HS kids how to behave properly when participating in sports and in the school. Olympians are professional adults, different story.
Its the responsibility of coaches and parents to raise kids with manners and have good sportsmanship. This guy is out of control and I can bet this is his typical behaviour off the track too. Probably too late to teach him proper etiquette. Being DQed twice isn't getting through to him. Bet Mommy and Daddy are furious about the DQ too. Apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.
