I agree it does not seem fair to allow intersex or trans males to compete in women's events. There needs to be a hormonal measure of testosterone levels to establish criteria for entry. It is clear that Getachew is male compared to female contestants.
It sounds like what you are describing is a male; maybe a deformed male, but male nonetheless.
The rules should be clear that males (deformed or other) are not to compete in women’s races.
Yup. I would describe these persons as males who were born with anatomical anomalies that make their outer genitals and urinary apparatus atypical for their sex.
To me, the important factor is that they have male gonads, testes, that are fully-developed and produce normal amounts of T for males. And they have male genetics and male androgen receptors that cause them to respond to the massive amounts of T that their testes produce as males normally do. Their testes might be in the wrong place, but there is nothing wrong with them.
Also, apart from having atypical urogenital anatomy, there is nothing wrong with these athletes. They are robustly healthy persons able to achieve the peak levels of physical fitness that other XY athletes with testes can.
The current DSD regulations also cover people with PAIS, who do not have normal androgen receptors, and therefore cannot achieve the peak levels of physical fitness that other XY athletes can.
This point was emphasized in Chand v. IAAF, and IAAF completely accepted it.
But whether they have the same advantage as other XY athletes is not the point, according to CAS. Because DSD regulations are about the eligibility in women's sports, and not about men's sports.

Did you notice how put-offish Abebe and the Ethiopian team members were? If you didn't, rewatch the post-race celebration.
Yea, I noticed that as well; nobody embraced or took a selfie with her -or him. However, you have got to give her -or him a lot of credit for going from a half-miler to medaling in the 5000 in one year. It is only a matter of time before the intersex athletes start to dominate the female 100, 200 and 5000. Sad!
As for the question about "proving your chromosomes" and "who is going to pay for the tests" and whatnot... don't we as fans generally support testing for doping, both in and out of competition?
Testing chromosomes is cheap and easy and would be a drop in the bucket compared to drug testing, and an athlete would only have to be tested once in their entire life, not over and over.

Yes, true. But people with PAIS have at least partial ability to respond to the testosterone that their testes produce in massive amounts as males customarily do. Which means that they are not female, and they also have a leg up over females in sports that gives them an unfair advantage.
I suspect that amongst the overall male population, there is enormous variability in androgen receptor function and thus ability to utilize the T that the testes produce.
But for me, the focus on XY DSD athletes' testes, testosterone levels and ability to respond to testes-produced T should all be beside the point in discussions of women's sports. Women's sports should be for the half of the human race who are biologically female - not for female humans AND males with a host of DSDs and gender identity issues.
The ridiculous rules established to allow DSD and trans-identified males into women's sports so long as they can demonstrate that their T has been lower than a certain threshold for a time opens the door to let in any males who have low T for any reason.
As discussed before, I don't think anyone with testes belongs in women's sports, but I am willing to compromise when it comes to XY persons with CAIS. Unfortunately, the loophole created to accommodate XY athletes with CAIS has been taken advantage of by a host of other XY DSD athletes whose DSDs are not like CAIS - and now by a worryingly large number of males claiming they "identify as" women and girls too.
Fact is, a lot of people on these boards don't care about the difference. They just want an opportunity to look morally superior and be spiteful.
If anyone does care: DSD athletes (XXY athletes / intersex athletes) express external (genital) characteristics of being female early in life. As they mature, their testosterone levels are higher, and they express some physical features in body shape more like men. I might not agree that XXY athletes should be able to compete against XX athletes due to their inherent advantages with that Y chromosome, but 1) they are women and 2) there should be mechanisms to let them compete and represent their nation.
M2W trans athletes also have inherent advantages due to their Y chromosome. Their transition might technically be a choice, but their innate biology drives them towards transition. Just like XXY athletes, I don't agree they should be able compete against XX women, but 1) they are women and 2) there should be mechanisms to let them compete and represent their nation.
Maybe we should start competitions and awards for intersex and M2W athletes like we have for paralympics? Imagine an intersex 800m at the WC. Would be pretty incredible competition, I think!
Inclusion is morally superior to exclusion. Fairness is morally superior to unfairness. So both sides have a moral point, it would be nice to see more synthesis of the views instead of people dismissing the other side's points altogether.
For example, if Getachew met the standards of qualifying for the race without trying to hide anything, we shouldn't complain, but some people might want the standards to become more strict.
The synthesis is one open division in which anyone can run, and one division for xx only. It is both fair and 100% inclusive. Eliminate the names "men's" and "women's" and call them "open" and "restricted" or whatever. That way no one is forced to run in a division named for a gender with which they do not identify. Instead, everyone has an opportunity to run, and everyone runs in a division based upon underlying biology, which is the reason why we have divisions in the first place.
Having a trans or intersex athlete who identifies as a woman run in the open division -- as a woman -- would do far more to further the general acceptance of trans and intersex people than having them run against XX athletes, which only angers a vast majority of the population and is not good for moving acceptance of trans-people forward. Imagine someone with Bruce Jenner's ability winning a decathlon gold medal as Caitlyn Jenner. In 1976 this may not have been accepted, but now it would help enormously.

No, females are not simply males minus the dangly bits, add "tubes and boobs" and take away some T. Females are different to males in innumerable ways. Since the era of modern genetics and cell biology began in the 1990s, a vast body of research shows that due to our different genetics, human males and females are physically different in thousands of previously-unknown ways. To wit:
A new University of California, Irvine-led study identifies sex-specific circuits of muscle signaling to other tissues and that the organs and processes muscle impacts are markedly different between males and females. This new discovery provides insight into how muscle functions, such as exercise, promote healthy longevity, metabolism and improve cognition.
The study, titled, “Genetic variation of putative myokine signaling is dominated by biologic sex and sex hormones,” published in eLife, is the first to evaluate how genetic architecture influences muscle signaling to other tissues...
“We already know that skeletal muscle plays an integral role in coordinating physiologic homeostasis. In this study, we sought to understand how muscle interacts with metabolic tissues and illustrate the importance of considering the effects of genetic sex and sexual hormones when studying metabolism,” said Seldin.

Do people really still not understand the difference between DSD and trans? One is assigned at birth, the other is chosen later in life and involves transitioning. Most of the DSD athletes believed they were girls throughout their upbringing and will identify as such

This solution is probably worth further consideration, but how do you actually propose sorting athletes into this camp unless they self-select for it?
An eyeball test performed by the LRC brain trust?
Will you personally be conducting the chromosomal tests and inspections of genitalia necessary to fill out the field for the proposed open 1500m?
Seems like a misunderstanding of the concept. Everyone would be welcome in the open field, so no sorting required.
It is entry into the protected women's category that would require tests (which are now hormonal, but could be chromosomal or other in future). The good news is that these things seem obvious to the trained eye, so you may not have to test everyone the way you do with PEDs.

Just as it isn't fair for some trans or intersex athletes to run against women, it is unfair to force them to only compete against men. That is exclusionary, not inclusive. There should be a trans and intersex category, but there usually aren't enough people to make that competitive. Actually, Semenya vs. Getachew in the 800 would make a good race this year.
They have a right to compete, but we have to make sure they have fair competition. It seems that Semenya and Getachew are a little beyond the limit many people are comfortable with, even though they are within the standards that have been set.
Strange that she ran a wold class 800 meter time last year, dissapeared before the olympics, and re appeared in the steeplechase a year later, running 8.54.
She has never even broken 9 so she is not even a great steeplechaser.
9:00 has only been broken 22 times in history by a total of 9 women. Prior to 2016, it had only been broken once. I guess a woman is not a great 10K runner if she hasn't broken 30:07.

It's even easier to have them do an XX or XY test.
Because even if they have lowered their testosteron, they have had the advantage of a male puberty.
