They could've worn Jimmy Hoffa's cement shoes and made the team.

While I am venting, I want to complain about USATF's own website, which said the TV coverage today would be on Universal Sports from 3-4 & NBC Sports from 4-6. Believing they should know, I missed an hour of coverage. It was actually on NBC Sports from 3-4 and then regular NBC from 4-6, as I realized when I checked NBC Sports a little before 4 pm!
You misread the website. I will agree that it was a little tricky but it was correct.
June 23 2-3 p.m. on Universal Sports, LIVE 3-4 p.m. on NBC Sports Network, LIVE 4-6 p.m. on NBC
2-3 p.m. on Universal Sports, LIVE
3-4 p.m. on NBC Sports Network, LIVE
4-6 p.m. on NBC
Curious why they showed the USATF Junior Olympic 5000m Results in concurrent with the USATF Outdoor Track and Field Championships?

This is my favorite part. Why do I have to switch between 3 different stations to follow all of 1 competition?

More history in a distance race. That was the slowest winning time since 1955 (and slowest in a 5000m since 1952):
http://www.usatf.org/statistics/USA-Champions/USAOutdoorTF/men/5000m.aspxIt was even slower than Bob Day's win in the 1968 OT held at 8,000 feet of altitude above Lake Tahoe of 14:37.4.
Horace Ashenfelter FTW!

Think of it as a kind of triathlon.
As bad as it is, it is better than the old days seeing 4 days crammed into a 90 minute highlight broadcast, or whatever...
there was a VIPAM thread a while back about how exactly had gone sub 4 for the last mile of a 5k..
Even tho Pre said in one of the movies (wrt the Oly 5k) "I'm gonna run the last mile in under 4..." a thread challenged that no one had actually done it. IIRC, a bunch of guys had been low 4, or like 359 for 1600, but it was pretty unclear how many people had done it. Maybe just a couple of big names had.
I know today's race was slow, but it was in the heat
Those final mile times are pretty astounding

Heat doesn't affect a 5k THAT much. Those final mile times should be commonplace in any race slower than 13:30. Heck, Bekele ran a 4:55 2000m in sub 13 5k race, didn't he?
American Ralph Hill ran a 14;30 -- in 1932.
"maybe if someone went into a comma people would be happy!"

Another example of the many genius level posters we have here at LR.
Did they like combine Steve Scott with Alan Webb or something? INTO ONE SUPERMILERHis record will never be broken

As a Jersey girl, loved that Horace Ashenfelter reference.
I know we are supposed to be glad that there is any coverage of track & field on TV, but this coverage is just so sad. How hard would it have been for them to mention that Shannon Rowbury was 3rd in the 5k? It was like 3rd place didn't matter. Had to figure it out from the replays but they never said it out loud, I don't think.
Also, appalled by the apparent lack of fact checking for the stats displayed on screen, i.e., Webb's AR in 1987 (when he was, what, 4 yrs old?) and today showing the women's 5k AR still belonging to Shalane. How do they come up with this? Do they just ask Craig Masback what he thinks it is and take his word for it? Or do they ask Tom Hammond?
Or maybe they get their data from USATF?

I might agree with this if two years ago Solinsky and Lagat didn't close a 13:20s race in just a tick slower than this one. The heat was a factor I guess but 5:20/5:00 miles?
