Yeah, the effort makes all the difference and it really matters a lot more than the time. A person running sub-12 can be working just as hard as a person running sub-4, if not harder. It's easy to get carried away with expectations, especially in the beginning, and then they get discouraged and frustrated because they can't outrun professional athletes after a couple weeks of training.

As for the 7 min mile, I just went out and ran 2.5 miles, for fun, just to see what a drunk (literally, like probably 0.12 BAC) could run at age 53, after dinner and drinks, on a Friday night in semi-COVID lock down, after running 7 miles this morning, working 10 hours at a desk.
1 wu at 9 min (0.25 mi-0.75 mi was rough), 1 at 645, half mile cd. And it wasn't that hard, BECAUSE I TRIED. Sure, I am in good shape. I'm also a little drunk, tired, old, arthritic. All u gotta do is TRY. My wife couldn't stop laughing as I did the 0.5 mile laps on the block.
Try harder, 45. 7 ain't nothing.

David, this site has 20 years of history. It's founders are both talented runners.
One of the founders was nationally ranked and competed internationally.
In the past, and still to this day, people frequent the board who have been quite competitive.
A lot of people have been on the board who have competed in the NCAA and there are Olympians who still come here.
I was an average high school runner and I have been made fun of on this board for my times.
I figured some people were out of touch with the effort I put in.
It's all relative.
I started slower than you, at a 10:30 PR for the mile in 8th grade of middle school. I proceeded to run a 14:16 (2 miles) for qualifying time for XC BECAUSE I THOUGHT I COULD DO IT. I then ran a 7:30 mile PR during XC season BECAUSE I THOUGHT I COULD DO IT. Then I ran 26:01 for my first 3 mile race. I was sad about the slow time but I thought to myself, I CAN DO THIS! So next race I ran a 22:32 BECAUSE I THOUGHT I COULD DO IT. On my PR during the same season I ran 20:03 BECAUSE I THOUGHT I COULD DO IT and PUT IN THE HARD WORK.
Get the picture?
It works for track, it works for cross, just apply a little bit of confidence and then maybe people will sing a different tune.
Also, take in people's advice. The reason you are on here is same as many: You are slow and want to get fast using the advice of experienced runners. Well you can't do that very well if you won't accept the fact that you are slower than several on here, or try to accept people's advice.
TBH, I though the same thing when I first went on LRC. I thought they had no idea what I had been through. But then I realized the whole reason I was on here was to get feedback, so I LEARNED from MY MISTAKES and got BETTER.
2 years later and my mile PR is 5:26. Take some confidence and accept the fact that you may be wrong.

You have an excuse for everything don't you. Do you even like to run? Nobody is going to feel sorry for you here. Just go out and run, a lot. Speed and fast times will come of you stick with it long enough.

I'd like to guess the talent cap for males in the mile is somewhere around 4:50-5:10. What I mean by that, is even if you have 0 talent, you can still get at least that fast with good training.
I started out highschool with a 30:36 5K and ended with 16:07. My mile started as a 6:32 and ended as a 4:39, and should have been in the low 4:20s this season.
You sound like the soccer moms that are 30 lbs overweight, run/walk 8-10 miles a week and 35 minute 5Ks that say they just arent talented and cant get any faster.

This. It isn't that LR is out of touch. It's just that it has a specific audience.
If there was a message board for offensive linemen, I'd expect posters there to think a 200 pound bench press was nothing special. I can't bench 200 lbs myself, but I'm a runner, not an offensive tackle.
On a message board for attending general surgeons, I'd expect the posters to consider an appendectomy to be a simple procedure. I can't perform an appendectomy myself, but I'm not a general surgeon and am thus not a part of the audience of that message board.
LR is a site for runners. Just like a group of offensive tackles won't think much of benching 200 pounds and a group of general surgeons don't think much of performing an appendectomy, a group of runners spanning from moderately serious to elite don't consider a 7 minute mile to be that special.
10/10 response. Also, people worrying about running a 7 minute mile should focus more on mileage, not time. People who consider a 3 mile run a sufficient day’s mileage but are also complaining about being unable to run a certain speed relative to others probably aren’t doing enough. If you’re gonna complain about other people being faster than you, at least put in some actual, decent mileage.

As my handle indicates, I am 66 years young.
I was a HS star (9:12 for 2 miles when tracks were cinder and uphill on both sides)
A decent big school D1 varsity foot soldier.
A good open runner and a very good master's runner.
Now I'm old and slow. I mostly walk with occasional jogging breaks (as opposed to running with occasional walking breaks).
50 years of hard running destroyed my running legs.
But I am happy and healthy and comfortable and content in my own skin.
