Why are DII schools so academically bad?

I will in this topic thread as it's proof of an incomplete education.

I just wanna say, whoever said 4:33/9:48 won’t get DI attention doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Well, scratch that. If you drop your mile by a mere 4 seconds, I believe you could receive DI attention (albeit not from a powerhouse program). Last year I ran 4:26/9:52 and (obviously a 4:26 is better than 4:29, but still) got attention from more than one DI school. Idc if 4:20 is the NCAA 1600 WALK-ON standard, America does NOT produce enough 4:20 and below 1600 athletes to have more than one for every DI school. It just doesn’t. if you want to go DI period, there exists some DI school in the U.S. that will take, and potentially sign, a 4:33 miler. Don’t let LRC tell you it’s not true, I’ve seen it before my very eyes.

Oh! I am wrong? Tell me who drove U.S. economy off a cliff a dozen or so years ago? I'll tell you. Men and women mostly (nearly all) from fancy private colleges and fancy private universities. I taught accounting at a hard scrabble city public high school year ago. Some no-it-all told me then that the accounting I taught was inferior to accounting taught at suburban high schools. Are you one of those individuals, Flagpole? Do you believe the instructors at University of Chicago know how to teach accounting and calculus in a superior manner as compared to the instructors at University of Illinois-Chicago? You fall for that razzle-dazzle they are selling at those $60,000 plus per year educational institutions.

Nice ACT score, but unfortunately the ACT doesn’t test for judgement skills. You shouldn’t be seeking out college selection advice on this message board. As an academic with nearly a quarter century of experience, I have found that regardless of the school, the sweat equity a kid is willing to put into their studies determines the value of their experience, just like running. My kid just graduated from a D2 school with a Geology major. They didn’t give away grades in his program and he will be starting a temp field job with the USGS. His experience on the track and XC was fantastic. Great coach, great teammates, conference team titles.

Most of the Einsteins posting here might find they have to spend quite a bit of time with the books in order to avoid a C in my frosh D2 bio course.

This thread very much makes me want to locate the homes of the elitist university douche bags and deliver upper deckers to all of you. Phuukk you rich people. When it all falls apart your heads are first to roll.

There is no age limit to compete D2. You can be a bag of nails and get a degree given 10 years to compete for 4.

You can be a 30 year old junior and compete.

The NCAA should lock down on this but who say they have any kahunas .

I echo some of the statements pushing you towards DIII, and to that end I highly recommend the University of Chicago. It is a haven for intellectual curiosity and intense work ethic. Additionally, your running stats would fit in there. It is expensive, however, and back when I applied, ~10 years ago, the financial aid package was atrocious. I hope that has changed. Had they given me more aid, I would surely have gone (I was given near-full ride at another place). Based on your academic stats, you may also consider Dartmouth, an excellent all-around institution; although your PRs may need improvement, as it's D1.

The University of Chicago is a better school with better students, on average better professors, allowing the classes to be more in depth and go at a faster pace with better questions from the students, so yes, the University of Chicago is a better place to go than the example you gave.

I'm amazed at the smallness of grown adults who care about college. College is prelude, nothing more. When I meet someone in their forties or older who cares about which college anyone went to, I know they are losers.

Not many colleges in general are academically good, so it's rhetorical question.

Elite places offer better connections than other places. It does not really matter unless you reach top 10 or so in most industries. It does matter a lot.

I could reach positions immediately straight from school others could only access after something like a decade of work and reputation. I received offers from corporate finance jobs, jobs paying >$100/hr, partner track at funds, and even better pathways exclusively because of the connections from my institution. Many of these will never become available to people outside these networks.

Look for scholarships because it is not worth 200k in debt to go anywhere except maybe Harvard. Despite the guys on here who think engineering is a good job, top jobs rank in order: finance, medicine, ph.d. research, j.d. law. Your academic ranking matters almost exclusively in all of these.

Division II has similar age restrictions as Division 1. Division 3 doesn’t have a blanket rule on age as Division 1 and Division 2 do. Maybe you meant NAIA.

In South Carolina at least, the latter is true.

Around them parts, going to Bob Jones University is considered prestigious.

A BJU grad who stays in Greenville probably won't have trouble with employment.

It depends a bit on what you want to study.

If I were going to do STEM, I would probably go to a D1 school and max out their resources (labs and technologies). You will make connections with professors and have post-grad options ready to go if you are at a bigger school. In this scenario, you will run on the Running Club* and have a lot of fun and set some huge PRs. You'll go to college meets and run as a club (against random schools and D3s. It will be fun.)

If you like rigorous academic discourse and debate, go D3. If you are doing a more traditional Liberal Arts degree, I would go to a challenging school with small classes, cool programs, great professors, and run D3. (This is in fact what I did.)

I know what you mean. If you are talking about the snobby, "where did you go?" kind of attitude, then yes, you are right.

But I don't agree that all colleges are equally rigorous (and the effort to get through that curriculum does point to a skill set that isn't equal).

If a person just got a 3.1 GPA in high school and floated through the basic classes at Eastern State College with a 3.3 GPA in some basic major, I know that is not the same "intellectual level" as someone who was grinding it out at Johns Hopkins with a 3.9 GPA in Human Physiology or pre-Law or whatever.

The level of daily effort required to major in business at The College of Southern University State is not the same as what you'd need to get through a math degree at University of Chicago or Emory or Rice or Cal Poly.
