I can’t imagine how hard it must be to work fairly hard for 10 months for a couple years, then kick back and live off the same lesson plan for the next 20-30 years not really caring about anything then retire and collect a pension
in most cases, the lifespan of lesson plans are much closer to 2-3 years than 20-30. Most teachers are changing subjects, grade level, schools, or curricula pretty consistently.
I'm one of the few people on the thread that is actually qualified to answer the question because I have taught and worked in a variety of other fields ranging from construction to tech. Teaching is harder than average, especially if you care about your student's education, which most teachers do. I left teaching for manual labor construction because it was easier and paid better. My current tech job is 20-30% harder but pays about 4x as much.
I would say teaching 2-3x time more difficult than most people suspect and not quite as hard as most teachers make it out to be.
The lazy/burned-out teachers, coasting by after teaching the same subject for 10+ years probably make up less than 5% of the workforce.
This is a great answer. The only people that work harder are making barrels of $$. I taught for three years, and the friends I have that work as much have been corporate lawyers, medical residents (about to cash in, temporary work insanity), and people with huge responsibilities in tech (who make serious bank).
The hours are tough early, and emotionally it’s draining if you work in a tough school with unsupportive admin (most city schools). My principal wouldn’t allow even approve a half day to get to a doctor’s appt. (because waiting for a weekend appt. would require months if waiting). Yes, the summers sound nice, but it’s too much time at once. Most teachers end up working some other job over the summer because being off on a Monday isn’t as much fun as it sounds.
Pay and benefits are OK, but most people with a Master’s degree make a lot more. There are a few bad teachers and the unions threaten to strike too much, which give teachers a bad name. But most people are capable workers who put in a lot of hours doing a job that is mentally exhausting. For parents, think about how frustrating it is to argue with your kid about something for 5 min. Imagine doing that all day every day with 30 kids who don’t respect you.
