I think the better way to phrase magic number 34 would be "if you were to go 1-4, you would need your 5th man to be 24th or higher to guarantee the win, because the next highest possible score would be 5-6-7-8-9 = 35 points." your 1-5-6-7-15 vs 2-3-4-8-16 scenario does not apply to that because nobody is going 1-4.
Granted, I'm not very bright, but the question was:
"What is the "highest low score" that is not beatable in Cross-Country"
MagicNumber 34 says it's 34. We scored 34 and lost. What the heck man. Several people agree with Magic, so clearly he's right.
I mean, the question was "What is the "highest low score" that is not beatable in Cross-Country"? We scored 34 and got beat. Clearly something is wrong, but I'm just not smart enough to figure it out. Maybe Magic can explain again how he got 34 for the answer to "What is the "highest low score" that is not beatable in Cross-County" so I can take it to league officials and get our results overturned. I'm mean 34 is not beatable. How'd we get beat?
Wait. Maybe Magic is the numskull? Could it be that he answered a different question than "What is the "highest low score" that is not beatable in Cross-Country"? Is every one who agrees with Magic a numskull? Are there numskull's on the internet? On letsrun? Say it's not so.
Magic Number does not say it is 34. He says it is 27. See my bolding, italicizing, and underlining above.
34 is the highest low score that guarantees a win IF AND ONLY IF your team goes 1-2-3-4. it is a silly aside but it is true.
