Whether Sage always having to validate some win from years back, make another public claim about doping, or some anonymous poster sharing such a negative view on somebody they'll likely never meet, just relax. There are serious things happening in the world outside of your running bubble.

That is true but we are talking about the running, sorry, the tan/hipster/sleeveless flannels/jog/wannabe climbing Boulder bubble. Context matters.

Some of you guy(s) are right... I am rather narcissistic....I'd say most millennials are though. I'm also addicted to social media and do blatant product plugs and shameless self promotion....including on here. This is true.

Note that in my earlier posts I did give Anton props for winning Leadville and running well at Western States too though. I also mentioned he beat Max King head to head. This is for reference as I know people on here are more likely to know a bit about Max's road marathon performances history (as well as my own of course!). I'm giving Anton credit for running super high mileage to max out his potential at distance running and ultras. I know that it takes hard work and it is hard on the body.

And I think runners like Anton still show that you don't need sub 2:20 marathon speed to win a mountain race like UTMB or some other mountain 100s still....as Anton was like a 2:25-2:30 +marathon guy and he did beat Kilian Jornet head to head at Western States 100 as well as ran pretty close times to what a guy like Krar put down at Leadville. Another example would be a guy like Zach Miller or an Alex Nichols (sidenote: Alex was a faster teammate of Anton's in college and seems to train more "scientifically").

I guess you're proving yourself right, by admitting narcissism, but then blaming culture for it - which is a pretty narcissistic thing to do. I don't think you were doing that intentionally, though - because you're a narcissist.

This thread seems to mostly be people from Colorado who are angry that Anton was ever famous, and that he somehow still is. The low-hanging fruit is to make fun of his clothing and appearance, so that's what half of the posts are about. Sage is extremely jealous of his stature, as he has to point out that he has run faster in similar races at every turn. Anton got lucky to jump on ultrarunning's rise to sort-of popularity, and has sort of turned into one of those "social-media influencers" and has managed to make his job just promoting products and climbing/skiing/running/cycling all day. We all wish we could do that and weren't able - for whatever reasons - to pull it off. I don't expect anyone to actually admit any of this on this thread, but it might be a good idea to just look hard in the mirror for a second and think about your real motivations to post are.

Speaking of 100’s, why do you struggle so much in 100-milers? Improper training? Poor mechanics? Mentally weak?

I would not say that a 11th place at Western States is "struggling much" at a 100 miler for Sage Canaday.

It's all about expectations and in ultrarunning a lot of these expectations are flat out wrong.

Just like some LR posters think a 2:05 Marathoner would smoke all other 100 mile runners.

Sage is a very good runner and he found his sweet spot at ultras up to 50 miles on trail.

The longer the race the more diverse the skill set gets a ultrarunner needs. In a 100 miler it's more about nutrition, tactical choices, crisis management than pure running skills. A lot of runners who have not done ultraraces have no understanding of this. Even ultrarunners have only a very limited idea what is possible over even longer distances in multiday running. That's what makes it so interesting.

UncleRico, if I had a dollar for every 2:34 road clown posting negative stuff on LR about ultra guys, who they could not beat at any distance, on any day, I'd have $10 million. Good luck beating any true ultra elite any distance. Jim could show up tomorrow and run sub 2:20 and you can't despite training you whole life for that. That being said, Anton is in fact done as an elite runner.

These are just young track runners who don't have any idea who ultrarunning works. There just see the average mile times and decide that it is slow.

True. Someone once told me the Carlsbad Marathon is "really hilly." I couldn't stop laughing. It has like 750 feet of total climbing. That's not even one hill in a decent ultra. My short easy run has 800-1,000 of climbing....probably not even a weekly total for the guys that run around ovals.

I did a 300K bike thing a few years back, a "rando" event or something. It started at some crazy hour, like 6 a.m. or something, because it took 12 hours for even most of the people to finish. It seemed like nonstop hills.

I drove it with GPS a few years later. 19,000 feet of climbing in about 190 miles.

This has nothing to do with anything being discussed here, but you reminded me of this.

Oh, and Anton is done for sure. I expect him to move back to the Nebraska farm in a year or two, and maybe run his Africa Trail or whatever now and then.

You're bragging about 1000 feet of climbing? I get that high in the first mile and a half most days, and I'm nobody.

It's elevation+pace, elevation alone is meaningless. How fast can you run the Carlsbad Marathon? Because that's what races are all about, even vertical Ks.

Road and track guys mocking ultrarunners because they aren't fast enough. Trail runners bragging about elevation gain. You sad bunch of morans... How many of you have earned the right to dismiss other runners like that?

If he'd heel strike like he's built to do, he'd be fine.

If he wore shoes for people too smart for their own good, such as Hokas, he'd be fine.

If he ran a max of 18 miles for long runs, and normal volume the other days, he'd be fine.

And if he used sunscreen, and wasn't shirtless 3/4 of the time in the mountains, he has a slim chance of not getting carcinoma in five years or so.
