When they say no state income taxes, that is correct and is trumpeted constantly by Republicans, so where's the hypocrisy here? Of course, what they don't usually admit is that they collect taxes through many other, less obvious means, such as permit fees, property taxes, and sales taxes. They can't square with their ideology the fact that states cannot function without taxes, so they make the taxes those less liable to political troubles, the more hidden the better and nickel and dime you. And they end up being often regressive. But in the end, they fail to adequately support their own state's needs in this manner. Case in point.

I'll walk outside in a few seconds and see where Houston is since I live here. I am lucky to have friends to shelter me after my home flooded. Houston and much of Texas sheltered NOLA Katrina survivors. We will restart the refineries real soon so that the rest of the country can have plastics, fuel and electricity.

Harris county, which is blue on the map, has 4.538 million (2015) people. Houston city has 2.303 million (2016) per google. Most of the Texas Gulf coast is sparsely populated. There are a few towns but the area going south from Houston toward Corpus Christi is mostly cotton and oil fields.

The city of Orange Texas is the closest city to the Louisiana border. Orange is about 115 miles east of Houston according to google maps.

It is truly sad to see how ignorant some people are on LRC.

Point being that there is a north / south divide on everything. I am not even talking bout the civil war BRUH. I am talking about the history of the union, from 250 years ago to RIGHT NOW BRUH.

And who in the hell thinks TEXAS doesn't pay Federal taxes. We pay just as much as anyone. So we should get just as much relief as any dang state. I am not paying federal funds for nothing! CRAZY AZZEZZZ!

You are too ignorant to understand that the majority of the flooded areas are Trump country. Houston is a blip in the flooded areas. It is surrounded by poor white people who are trump voters.

I know more about that map that you can ever know. I have lived all over that dang map and no, most of the areas mostly affected, which were SE houston, Meyerland, Pasadena are ALL very minority and democrates. Even my sister in the Katy area, has some flooding.

If you dont live here, you have no idea. Areas just south of Houston like Warton didn't get ANY rain. It just depended upon where the bands were hitting. There is a river outside my house right now and we are trapped. So please just go to your corner and eat some cookies and milk.

YES it is a 500 year flood! The rivers here are higher than it has EVER been. Nothing has ever done this.

But this isn't the storm that did this, it was the front that hit it and made it stall. If it had moved through like a normal storm, no problem, but have a hurricane sit on top of you for 6 days, and it is a ONCE IN A LIFETIME event.

This isn't a normal hurricane, this is a hurricane that came, visiting for a while, and freaking wouldn't leave like some relatives i know!!!

I disagree! There is NO amount of planning that can handle a cat 4 hurricane sit on top of you for a week! For a day, fine, but a week, that is smoking crack.

Why do you think any amount of planning can handle that. A lot of the flooding happened on the second and third day of the storm, when if it didn't stall, it wouldn't have happened as it SHOULD have already passed. Much less the 3rd and 4th day flooding like yesterday.

We still have a tropical storm sitting 100 miles from the city and getting plenty of rain.

How in the heck do you plan for that!!

Well, if TEXAS didn't have to pay money to the fed gov fine, then you could see what TEXAS could do, but Texas pays just as much as anyone, so what are you talking about.

Houston has had 500-year rainfall events in 2009, 2015, 2016, and now in 2017. Three years in a row. Four events in the last nine years.
