Come on , Centro as #1 is a total and complete joke. The Olympic final was a farce of a race. Jog around and then kick. Kiprop is the true #1. Centro will be lucky to be top 5 in 2017. Maybe only top 10.

For those that keep saying the Olympic final winning time was a joke and Centro's win was tainted because of the slow time, do any of you realize that in 99% of championship 1500's the pace is slow?

In your opinion, even tho time means absolutely nothing to the athletes in the race, what is your cutoff time that makes it not a "joke" race?

3:40? Even tho college athletes can run that.

3:35? Even tho that almost never happens in these sit and kick races.

Every ranked athlete on the world and US list laughs in your face at your naive suggestions that slow times in championship races make those races and their efforts inferior.

They look at you and your lack of knowledge and track ability and yawn as they wake up every morning and realize that going to work for them is going running...and going to work for you is a stretch goal or at best a drag.

This is true. The 1500 is the 1500. Part of the skill set of a world class miler is the ability to succeed in tactical affairs. If you are only one dimensional and suck at tactics, you won't fair well in most championships. Face it, championship races are usually slow and tactical.

A time that is not the slowest winning time in the modern era.

Nope. The fact that it has been discussed ad nauseum since Rio gives some weight that Centro's gold performance was sub-par for Oly 1500. It's not to say he didn't legitimately deserve his gold, but no matter what, his slow time matters and has already been judged and will be forever.

Kiprop is #1 period. My "lack of knowledge" is certainly good enough to know this.

And yes, Ill be going to work tomorrow , not running for a living like you mentioned, but not a drag at all.---- Some jobs involve skiing all day and it has snowed 8 ft since last weekend. Cheers.

WINNING is the whole point of racing. How you get to the finish line first or whatever strategy you employ en route or what time you run is secondary to WINNING THE FLIPPIN' RACE YOU WINGNUTS.

By even mentioning the fact that the time was bad in the Olympic final shows YOU HAVE NO FREAKING CLUE WHAT YOU ARE ATTEMPTING TO TALK ABOUT!!

It's quite simple; in an Olympic year the gold medalist is number 1 in the world. End of argument! No other race matters in an Olympic year for the top performers in each event.Or at least it shouldn't!

Every other year, by all means consider the whole season. Even the World Championships do not have anything like the same status as the Olympics - they might have done if they hadn't switched to holding them every two years.

Could it be that Centrowitz's gold is being under valued because of the farcical nature of the actual race?

The race wasn't farcical. It was a normal, sit and kick Championship style race. They don't care about time in those races. Shouldn't we all know this by now? It's all about tactics and strategy and being able to be in position to win coming off the final turn. Oh, and being able to run a 50 flat last 400 on top of all that other stuff.

I'd say, doing all of the above is much harder than running a 3:31/3:32 which almost all of those finalists have done.

What about Wilson Kipketer in the 800m in 1996? Undefeated on the year and wasn't allowed by the IOC to compete. Um yeah he was still #1 that year, just like Kiprop was this year. Centro is the Olympic champ, he just isn't the best 1500m runner in the world.
