What will you do if Evan Jager breaks the steeple world record?

He only has to run 4 seconds a mile faster.

I doubt him setting a WR would cause me to do anything beyond commenting on a thread about his WR race.

Exactly, Centro was probably close to even odds to medal given his championship history, Murphy has shown incredible talent and has consistently beaten the top Americans all year and took NCAAs in his off-event. There are always uncertainties at the Olympics so the #2 capturing gold can never be a surprise. Jager was a medal favorite IMO, since there were only four runners who had any chance of beating him (unless he crashed) and his preparation this year has been great and he's shown his potential to compete with anyone.

The #3 (barely) runner at the US Trials getting second in the Olympics is much more surprising than the US Champion getting third.

Jager won Olympic silver at steeplechase, beat Kemboi, Benabbad, B. Kipruto etc. Jager came third against the best 5000m runners in the world bar Farah, 5000m is not his event. Jager ran 8 flat after falling over.

I might be clown but that doesn't mean this clown is wrong. He ran 8 flat falling down a year ago and the Olympics were a month ago. He peaked for the Olympics and clearly isn't in shape to run a world record let alone break 8.

Lets play in Malmo's fantasy world for a moment and assume they were only concerned with the other diamond league points contenders and let him go because of that. Ok , they still were 50-80 meters behind with a lap to go and caught him. Now if it had been a fast time like sub 13 you could say he is in great shape , he went for it , and could challenge the WR or go sub 8 at the very least. The troubling part was he didn't hold onto the pace and looked horrible at the end and only came through 3k in 7:56.

He ran 8 flat fallling down a year ago and the Olympics were a month ago; and he won a silver medal. Do you think he's in worse shape this year? What evidence do you have for that?

In Zurich he beat Rop (12:51 in 2013), Iguider (3:28!), Kejelcha (top 5000m talent behind Farah?), Lagat (his country's champion over the distance ffs), Edris (second in the Diamond League standings)...

As Malmo keeps saying YOU/WE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT SHAPE HE'S IN BASED OFF WHAT WE'VE SEEN.

Of course he probably won't break the world record - it's the world record - but you can't read a performance trend into one race. (And even if you could, he ran well in the race that is being cited as evidence of his downward fitness trend.)

Would you be impressed if Paul Chelimo took a huge lead in a Diamond League final steeplechase and then got caught on the last lap by two men, still coming third? Would that be unimpressive?

Some of you are not very bright. Malmo never wrote that Jager's run in Zurich was impressive. He posed a question asking what about it was unimpressive. There was nothing unimpressive about it. What is unimpressive are posts which keep disparaging Jager's Zurich race. I sense that some of you never raced at a high level. For those of us who did, we can applaud Jager's attempt to run fast. You timid souls will never experience this.

What the hell are you talking about? Ive never said his best event would be the marathon. Ive always said Ritz's best distance is between 3000-5000. The only thing I've ever said about his marathon potential is that "I wouldn't be surprised if he ran 2:07."

He ran 6 seconds faster for 1500m last year 3:32 vs. 3:38 and 4 seconds faster for the steeple by this point. So what evidence do you have that he is in equal or better shape?

I'd probably go on YouTube and watch the race video a couple times. And then probably watch the race viceo a dozen or so times within the next 6 months for inspiration.

And then six months later I would finally break into the 15:xx club in the 5000meters.
