Dude.... Relax, I'm not blaming the banks one bit. I agree money has to come elsewhere.

The best part of this thread is that people have stuck in the guidelines of not making it political.

Chicago Tribune had the stat today that only about 30% of murders are solved. To me that's staggering. Imagine walking around knowing there's less than a 1 in 3 chance you'll be locked up for killing someone?
The problem is that the victims (or the victims friends and family) are a huge part of this problem. There is a huge code of silence around this because everyone is afraid of being next. Police get no information from anyone and take the attitude of, if they don't care enough to help, why should I care.
It's all a big mess.
The inability of the Bears to put a decent product on the field is a contributing factor. Jay Cutler is a joke.
First "they" did it to the Indians (locked up on reservations and taken care of cradle to grave by the gubmint), just about got the blacks finished up ... Now for those pesky white folk. Vote Trump or Johnson.
You could say that the lack of black fathers is causing this social chaos but in reality it is the fault of someone else for all the problems facing the city of Chicago.

You have too much common sense for Letsrun readers to understand.

Who can blame them? The mainstream narrative and "peaceful protesting" focuses on the 1% of rogue cops, and the other 99% are in harm's way more than ever.
Source for stats?
Just moved to Hyde Park this summer.
don't know the answer -- still learning the story.
One thing I think I remember is D-Wade's cousin was shot a few weeks back -- the guy arrested had multiple felonies. People are getting arrested and released on illegal gun possession. If you are found with a gun - you're not going back home. Should be as simple as that.
There are also no man's land. PD won't even go in. They'd probably be shot at just driving through.
I agree even though the old roots of the problem date back decades to racism, inequality, and social issues -- the problem still needs to come from the community itself. Can't put up with gangbangers anymore.

Oh I agree, I didn't mean to imply the police were at fault. More just to point out how the mentality to freely commit murder is diametrically opposed to what you and I know in our lives. Just crazy.
Sweet home, Chicago. Lets stay on record pace with a goal of 4000 shootings, we at about 3200 now. Stats say a shooting every two hours and that's with poor marksmanship.
Sorry for the micro aggression, because BLM!
It's easier to sit in your patrol car and eat doughnuts than it is to get out and roust some miscreant who is only going to yell "racism".
If you live in Hyde Park you're the beneficiary of a whole extra police department (U of Chicago police department provides an extra 140 police between Lake Shore Drive and Cottage Grove Ave, and 37th to 64th Streets). Not to mention the security guards to University puts on every corner. Saturation policing works, but for the most part people don't want to pay for it.

His post was insightful and encouraging. I am not sure why the one guy picked the bank item to argue, as it is clear that he agreed with "Lived There" for the most part.
I like the idea of someone like Oprah starting a program, but I suspect she knows more than we do about the situation. The other thing is that many of these people have no desire to work or even improve their situation. I have worked with various social programs since getting my Masters in public policy back in 2001 and it is disheartening. I had to go into the private sector because I couldn't deal with the apathy.
Conventional wisdom tells you that someone living in roach-infested section 8 with 4 children surrounded by violence would do about anything to get out, but in reality that isn't the case. To make matters worse, you have a local government and vilifying anyone who tries to better their life or improve the school system. If you want to see red, go try to get something done in a city like Chicago.
I moved out of Chicagoland recently. The people there are scumbags. Some are disguised in nice jobs, etc.. But I finally ran out of there. They deserve to have problems there.
You having worked in the area somewhat recently as a trained professional on the front line would have much more knowledge of the situation then I.
My thought is that the current 20ish generation "are who they are", it would be very difficult to change the bad in them. A lot of those people unfortunately have no desire to work because they don't know how to work. They don't have basic skills. What they do know is how to run the streets. These are the people that law enforcement should target and deal with in whatever manor that is.
The Operah angel would target the younger generation and those who are middle aged and have proven not to be a problem in society. The Operah angle would have had powerfully leaders and worked with the politicians, keeping them accoutable as well. This process along with anything that is going to help the situation is going to take decades.
I'm curious where you lived in Chicago and where you moved Too? People who generalize on here are typically trolls. Their opinions rank near the bottom.
