Anyone who saw him race that DMR at Penn would know this is so far from the truth. The kid has the wheels, AND plenty of grit and determination. Hardly a latch-on.
I think a better discussion might be which coach displayed a larger ego while their hs athlete was on a historic run through the record books...

The fact this thread has gone to five pages is enough to convince me Tinman should have kept his mouth shut, i.e. walk the walk then talk the talk.

Its going to be windy. Slowish first 800 followed by mad kicking, like last year. Drew wont be able to keep up past 1000m, what with all the neg splitting that will occur, as i see it. he'll be lucky to PR. Wish him the best. Re: SLAG in the national mile, i believe he'll PR and hit something like 355/56 and be in the top 7. just my feelings, but ive been at every Pre event since 2000 and have seen both Slag and hunter run in person. pretty confidnt ill be right. no offense to anyone, they are both great hs runners.

Seems like a poor coach to me. As far as I can tell Hunter hasn't run a single meet this year when he wasn't sick or had a bad back. At some point that is the fault of the coach

So Drew is running the Bowerman Mile because he's going to Oregon. Slagowski isn't in the Bowerman because he's going to Penn, right?
Look at Slagowski's progression. In a couple of years it's going to be laughable that anyone believed Hunter could break 3:52 in a mile, while everyone else will be wondering when Slagowski will break Webb's AR in the mile.
Sounds like he is not going to try for Ryun's 3:51. 3 American Junior Record set 50 years ago in 1966, this is Hunters last year as a Junior, so it's now or never for the Mile AJR, well he can still get the AJR in the 1500 (Ryun also has that with his 3:36.1 en route to his 3:51.3 mile, 3:51.3 mile equates to a 3:34.20 1500), It is a little disappointing he does not set his goals higher, well I guess Webb's 3:53.43 is a good consolation.

People on LetsRun gripe about the secrecy of coaches like Alberto Salazar and Jerry Schumacher. When a coach like Tinman comes forth with great detail about plans and expectations for the race he gets hammered for putting unrealistic expectation and pressure on his young athlete and for being arrogant . You can certainly see why other coaches don't put forth similar strategy detail and risk being crucified when things don't go as well as expected.
One of the reasons that American kids are beginning to run faster times is due to the rise in expectation. It is tough to accomplish something which you have not previously envisioned. When the mindset was that a sub 4:00 mile was next to impossible for high school kids, nobody was doing it. One of Tinman's talents appears to be in helping Hunter visualize and expect high levels of accomplishment.
Hunter has demonstrated great endurance by winning Footlocker by a wide margin, yet has also exhibited the speed to run 1:48 for 800 meters with no previous 800-specific racing in over a year. That is insane range for a high school kid. The combination of those performances suggest that he could survive a hot pace in the Bowerman Mile. Slagowski has demonstrated the ability to run smoothly in the 1:48 range, but his endurance is a question mark. As much as I would like to see him in the Bowerman Mile, I personally think he has way less chance of blowing up in the National Mile race. He will have his hands full to beat Tamagno in that race. Tomagno set the course record on the storied Mt. Sac cross country course as a junior last year and also ran away from the field in a smooth looking 1:50 in the 800 at the Arcadia meet after being boxed out at the scratch start.

"latch-on-ability." Correct. But couple that with the inner singularity of being in the n o w. Quite an experience if Hunter can quell that ego, like a black hole and the outer worlds rescinds into silence. Think machine :)

That is the second posts that said Slagowski is going to Penn. He is going to Penn State not Penn. They are not the same. Penn State is a state school that competes in the Big Ten, Penn is in the Ivy League.

Drew's talent is making tinman look good. tinman's training has little to nothing to do with it. tinman should thank his lucky stars that he gets to work with drew. to say a 3:57 high school milers isn't that talented is the biggest load of crap - he's trying to make himself look like a genius.
