bay area jogger kicks and kills off-leash dog

I run in the East Bay parks all the time. I have been attacked several times by dogs that the owners swear are "friendly" and "have never done it before". I can't count the number of times a dog has started growling and showing his teeth to me. Honestly, it has been hundreds of times. When they do this, I yell at the owners and they act like its anyone and everyone else's fault but their own.

The rules in these parks state that the dog has to be under voice control to be off-leash. If a dog is attacking someone - or even just taking an aggressive stance towards me on the trail I would argue that the dog is not under voice control and should be on a leash.

The dogs are just being dogs - I don't blame them. I blame the jackwad owners who are ignorant and arrogant. When you dog comes sprinting up at me growling I can't just "take your word for it" that you stupid f**king dog is "friendly" and "wouldn't harm a flea". I can't tell when he's coming at me growling. D-bags.

The fault here lies with the dog owner, not the runner. Maybe the runner overreacted. I wouldn't be able to tell without seeing the dog and how it was acting. Honestly, having an unleashed or unfenced in dog should be a felony and should carry jail time after a couple warnings.

Also, don't act like someone needs to be bigger than the average Asian 8th grade girl to whoop a skinny runners ass who is afraid of a dog. Loser.

The vast majority of running dogs display docile body language. Even the ones that are hostile are far more likely to stop and bark and harass you than try to bite.

Dogs are quite predictably harmless. If they weren't, there wouldn't be so many living among people. When you hear news of dog attacks, it's news because it's the exception that proves the rule. An unleashed dog running around isn't cause for alarm.

even if a dog is "harmless," it's still not fun to have one barking and growling at you. people need to keep their dogs on leashes. it would be the same as if some guy came up to you while you were running and started verbally harassing you for no reason. that's how i feel when an unleashed dog starts barking at me, and it pisses me off.

keep your dogs on leashes, people. just because it's nice around you doesn't mean it's the same way to strangers.

and i am in no way supporting the runner in this story. it was a small dog. he shouldn't have kicked it so hard.

dogs are unpredictable, but you can -try- to predict whether they're aggressive or not based on their body language, and act accordingly.

if a dog does -sprint- towards you, stop running immediately.

I remember reading that Meb got injured one year while training for Boston because of a dog attacking him on a training run. Forced him to miss that year. Even a small dog under your feet can cause serious injury. I have owned dogs in the past and have been attacked while running at least 8-10 times . You defend yourself any way you can your adrenaline is pumping and you don't want to get bit.

To bad the dog died but that's what it gets the owner is just as much to blame.

That seems like quite the inconvenience, and would not teach the mongrel the same lesson as my Asics.

I'm not sure if the runner was in the wrong. I am quite positive the owner was in the wrong.

I don't care if the dog was off it's leash or not, or if the owner is to blame here.

The coward kicked a lap dog that a little woman was walking. He may be "legally" protected, but he's still a coward and did the wrong thing.

Also, in this bad example scenario, cars are not prone to unexpected behavior. The lady isn't at fault for her dog being killed just because she broke the law, she's at fault because she broke a law that protects both her dog and others. She didn't DESERVE to have her dog killed, but it was 100% preventable, and that prevention lied in her hands. Her dog is dead because of her lawless action. People before dogs.

As a runner and dog owner myself, the millions of dog owners who don't follow ordinances and keep their dogs on leash and pick up after their dogs

Pisses me off.

Dogs CAN harm people no matter how small. Some states have strict liability for injuries caused by dogs-- owner is directly criminally feloniously responsible. To be honest, stupid dog owners need to be kicked hard, fined and jailed.

Would you guys be just as outraged if the dog kicked the jogger leading to his death? Just curious on your thoughts.
