QOD Grant Fishers coach is arrogant and full of himself

I think Grant Fisher is potentially a sub-4:00 high-school miler, but credit can not be given until he actually achieves it.

I applaud Mike Scannell's confidence in Grant Fisher. But the statement, "For me, Grant Fisher is a sub-4:00 miler. I am 100% certain," says Scannell, is a bit too defined and places Grant in a five-man class he has yet to earn. As stated, it was certain to draw comments and over the top criticism on LetsRun.

Winning back to back Footlocker championships is a great achievement. Unfortunately, Grant did it at a time when some top competition is split between Footlocker and NXN. Grant's winning times at Footlocker are mediocre at best and do little to place him on any all-time great high school cross country list. Two Footlocker wins are great, but last year he beat mostly a bunch of underclassmen and this year several of the top competitors had been injured and another (Matthew Maton) was sick during the week leading to Footlocker and unable to run on two days.

Had Grant Fisher run faster at Footlocker or set some notable course records, that would help him be remembered as all time great HS cross country runner (aka Ritz).

Running a sub-4:00 mile places a runner on the "all-time great" list immediately. A coach can have confidence, but that achievement is special. Grant Fisher might have that ability if he chooses. Let's not make him a sub-4:00 miler until he runs sub-4:00.

You are misquoting Scannell just as Wejo did. The "high school" timeline was never mentioned by Mike. You made it up yourself. The man clarified as much earlier in the thread. Please learn to read. Your entire post is pointless

If you are too good to train with your team, don't race with them. Go do your club thing and be all you can be.

Again, do the majority of private coaches email the school coach and work together? No. They do not.

I've seen athletes win a state championship and then have a private coach talk scholarships and bad mouth the coach and poach them away. Again, maybe not this guy, I don't know. But those who are pro private coaches are obviously selfish and it's all about you. That's cool, just not a good way to live or teach our youth. But it's your kid.

Club and private coaching isn't new. I just can't imagine some kid refusing to practice with the team in any other sport and expect to play. But I guess that's how you all parent now.

If you don't know, then why don't you shut up? Fisher trains with his team Monday-friday and runs with friends on weekends as well, probably. What more do you want? He's always trained with Scannell. Scannell is a family friend.

You've already driven everyone related to Fisher off of Letsrun, and probably seriously impacted Fisher's openness in future interviews as well. Why don't you just quit while you're behind and stop posting such hate here.

Finally, if you want to respond that toy just want to have conversation about private coaches here, I'll respond by saying that

1. This thread isn't about private coaches; it's about whether Scannell is arrogant ( he isn't.) and

2. The conversation you want to have isn't a conversation, it's just you saying how much you hate private coaches. You've succeeded in saying that already, so you can stop.

Suffice it to say that my friends who are personal trainers charge about the same for two hours of their time as Mike does for a month of coaching. He's obviously not in it for the money.

Mike Scannell's quote is a direct quote from the article, so it is not misquoted and the meaning is not taken out of context. The word "is" is present-tense and not future-tense. The coach believes Grant is able to run a sub-4:00 mile now and he may be right. But as stated and meant in the article as written and quoted, the coach opened himself up for criticism. Refining his meaning afterwards does not undo the original meaning.

You are not a sub 4 guy until you run sub 4. It's akin to saying claiming that you could have run a certain race that you didn't run.

The coach botched the answer.

He will not land a College job. He will not be Coaching pro runners. He will cease to exist in the running world. Let him have his day.

Sort of correct. I am sure he will continue to correctly develop and mentor other athletes who come under his wing in high school. However he may never have a talent like this kid again.

High school coaches need to protect, educate, and preserve talent. Too many of them, and other US coaches, think its about them.

I think this coach will continue to be invaluable to his charges.

This kind of complete and total oversight of every detail of a runner is the correct to train.... but only if it is continued for the entire career of the runner. Peter Coe to Seb Coe, Salazar to Rupp comes to mind. But send this kid to college to a coach whose obligations and job will not allow this oversight and then what? Perhaps the kid will learn to adapt or become a Webb or German etc.

Since he also has a real job in engineering/manufacuring, that is surely much more lucrative than *nearly* every coaching job in the country (I'm sure some douche will bring up Salazar or Lanana or something), he probably couldn't care less about never being heard from again. All he's doing is answering questions during interviews that are coming to him. It's not like he's out there with a blog, preaching, making outrageous claims, putting down others, etc. People are seeking answers from him and Grant, they're providing answers. That's it. If you don't like the answers, that's your problem.And you never know, maybe Grant's younger brother will decide to win some national championships too.

Name one famous Coach that only coached 1 athlete that anyone ever heard of and no longer coached the athlete after high school?

Mike Scanell is enjoying his 15 minutes of fame. Nothing more.

I believe he will go on to lead a wonderful life. Much like my grandfather who coached a FL champion in the 90's.

How many can name our most recent Olympians high school coaches? Only those from their hometowns.

After seeing some of his article and interviews:

Don't get me wrong, he's an excellent coach, and I think what he's doing w/ Grant is fine... I think he will get him in sub 4 shape, but I do agree that he needs to get him in a race to do it...

Running sub 4 in HS is something that a kid like him will always be able to look back on and will never forget, that he was one of the only ones to go down as sub 4... If he's in the shape, why not do it? If I got a HS runner is sub 4 shape, I would feel bad for not running him in a race to AT LEAST TRY...

I think Scannel is just bluffing, he'll give him a sub-4 opportunity, then he'll come off with an arrogant comment about, "oh well, we weren't actually going for a sub 4, it kind of just happened, I mean he was in that shape, but we were hoping he'd run 4:01 so we could preserve him for college, cause quite honestly, I don't want anyone to think I'm a coach who overtrains a kid and runs him into the ground"... I don't think his coach means to be that way, but that's just his personality, sometimes people are just like that...

I hope he goes sub-4 one day and is extremely successful, but his coach saying he is a sub-4 miler without him doing it does the kid no favors.

Insufferable critics and incompetent moderators: There are two possibilities here. 1. Fisher is in shape to run sub 4 and his coach spoke the truth; or 2. His coach oversold his current ability by a second or two.

Do your forum a favor. Remove stupid posts that have a chilling effect on participation by star athletes and coaches. And apologize promptly to children when your low brow clientele take pot shots at them.
