Sage, I don't disagree, but the 3k is the one event that doesn't hurt at all for me until ~800m to go. I believe you're able to maintain your max HR for 8-9 minutes, and it takes about 3 minutes to ramp up fully, so this makes some sense. I'm definitely a 3k specialist - my 3k PR is significantly better than my mile and even my 5000m - but I do believe there are some people who are so built to one particular event that it doesn't hurt for most of the race.
