Why do so many people give up on physical fitness after hs and college?

The human body is easily "fit" from early teens to late 20's.

However, our metabolism begins to slow slightly in our mid 30's, and the metabolism gets slower and slower as we age. Then, we also tend to eat as much each year, when we also do not exercise as much.

so, we have people getting out of high school where gym classes are mandatory unless mommy gave a note, and where most did at least one sport,...now going to college, where they can drink easily, and booze, sex and partying become a bigger part of the social life.

Add to this, getting a real job or expecting to live on your own soon, make some money, make plans for your future, and you have a recipe for gaining weight.

You are not as active, you eat the same as when you were, you drink beer, and your metabolism slowed.

I thought about this the other day. I can go run in the college town near me and see all sorts of folks running around campus in the mid afternoon, but in the suburbs where I live, I can typically count the number of runners I see on a given day on one hand.

what percentages of HS/college kids are really exercising for the sake of "physical fitness"....not many yo!

it's for a sport, to get laid, or because some chick in another sorority called you fat.

I thought most competitive runners did so partly to keep their 6-packs.

Exercise is not effective at all in reducing cholesterol. Genetic hypercholesterolemia is not very common. Those people need drugs.

Diet can prevent maybe something like 25-30% of all cancers.

There's always risks in urban environments.(traffic)

It's because that over 40% is such a huge number. Lifetime statin users would rarely get cardiovascular diseases.

Running is great, but if you are constantly hurting and hurting bad, you dont enjoy it at all. You never get to the point where you can't just do your daily 30 min run. And I'm not talking about feeling bad because you're out of shape, Im talking about joint pain.

+ 1 to this. Back when I was a competitive runner, I didn't care about my health at all. I only cared about setting a pr or beating other runners. I ran 80+ mpw not for exercise but for training. Of course, I made fun of inactive fatties for being, well, inactive fatties.

Fast forward to today. I have osteoarthritis in both knees and I can't run at all. I've managed to keep my weight in check via diwt and alternative forms of exercise, but my motivation had to COMPLETELY change. It was easy to be motivated by competitive goals, but it is harder to be motivated by strictly health goals. Plus, when I wake up and my knees are screaming, it takes a will of iron to go exercise instead of sleeping in. I still do it, but it is HARD. Comparing motivation to exercise now to my young competitive running days is

apples and oranges. If you're young, pain free, and training for a race, you literally have NO IDEA what it is like on the other side.

Tangentially, I don't know how much my years of running contributed to my knee condition today. My doctor is convinced it is the reason, but bothe my parents and my sister have had knee problems, so it's hard to believe genetics wasn't a factor.

Sure. Just living in some places is dangerous. People die going to the grocery store. Bad news for "diet" I guess. And people choke on their foods.

(That still has nothing to with diet vs exercise. And your belief that everyone should go on statins for their life is downright silly. Yes, it's an easy, good solution for those with higher LDL and CRP, but exercise AND diet and reduce both those levels to very safe levels. Many healthy societies, and many, many healthy-lifestyle people in all societies, have very low CVD. No matter what you believe, there are risks to lifetime drug use.)

You were incorrect. On the average, a sedentary person, who sits all day long, but eats a "great diet" will not be healthier than a person who is very fit, and eats a decent diet. One's genetics of course matter a lot, and after that, being active/fit AND eating a healthy diet (which both enable one to be a healthy weight) matter. You are saying fitness is useless for good health compared to diet. This is simply untrue. Time to wave the white flag.

I'm just so damn tired & lazy after work....

I make to much to give a ish about maintaining physical fitness. Now that I am done with collegiate running I have money, I can focus on my job and doing fun activities. After many years of running im completely happy taking some time off from being fit. fugg it

Not effective in reducing LDL, sorry. 95% of people have higher than optimal levels in the US. Statins can reduce up to 55%.

That goes for all kinds of diets. You have to eat something.

That was not my belief, but it's true anyway. Stop saying exercise is an effective way to reduce LDL. IT IS NOT. There are risks, but benefits are far greater.

He is much healthier than an exerciser who eats the average diet. Fitness is not useless.
