As several others have pointed out using actually logic, running a race at a much faster effort will lead to a slower last lap. That's basic track 101 and is incredibly stupid to state. The fact that someone else closed faster does not mean you're better or worse off a fast pace, it can just simply mean the other guy is better. Lawi being the best miler in the NCAA would suggest he can do pretty well off a slow pace as well.
It always amazes me how unintelligent people on here are, and how much of a diuchebag people like Gonchar are.

That assumes Ches's strength is his kick and not his endurance or both. He beat up on people in the 10k because he has superior endurance and solid mile speed. 28:30 was a jog for him. Lalang also has amazing endurance but even better short speed. Off a slower pace he could have beat Ches by even more over the last 1600. People like you are actung like Lalang has no kick. He had injuries indoors which left him not in peak form at nationals. Everyone with a brain knew that wasn't the 13:00 3:33 Lalang at indoor nats.

Guy just closed in 56.7 in a 13:18 race after a 3:41.03 1500 the day before, just a tad ahead of ches. Chez ran a 53 at the end of a jogging fest. That doesn't mean anything other than he can run a 24.8 rested with his tremendous endurance.
Fact is they both can kick and both have amazing endurance, but don't think you're wise if you think Lalang can't kick with ches when he's fit.

Do you understand that this also takes the sting out of your kick? It only works if you're much faster than the person you're trying to beat.
See: people trying to tame Bekele's or Geb's kick.
I thought it was an excellent race, but with Chesereks' flailing left arm and giving up 15 meters out, it was far from the best ever. I hated to see him give up like that.
Always focus on form, elbows in, run through the tape, and dip your head at the finish line --- but never surrender.
Give up? Seriously Cheserek does not know how to give up.
And the arm flapping everyone witnessed? That is exactly what happens with him any tine he is/was distressed or completely fatigued in an over the edge effort . Saw it a lot in HS racesm chasing wildly in DMRs out in 1:59/2:00 and in allo out efforts in stretch runs.
The reason no one saw it yet, if that he was well within himself in every blistering last 200-300M he ran to win.
This race ,pace really really fast for an all collegian race was stiff right from the get go at about 4:16 high? and he still ran 56.x in a 13:18 race with last 200 probably 27 flat pr so?
He just got beat by a better guy and a guy who has run under that before, Cheserek never had and in the end it looked like it.
This was not the "GREATEST 5K IN NCAA HISTORY" but it was fun to watch.

who was the pathetic dartmouth runner that wouldn't concede lane 1 on the home stretch? I am not the biggest distance fan in the world, but come on. That was an exciting race. Get over yourself and move out of the way for the real competitors.
Both are great runners and put on a great show. That being said, Edward did reveal a chink in his Armor...either that or he pick an odd time to do a floppy bird impression.

Actually the one who leads the whole race is the winner of the race. I recall a runner preparing for the '84 olympics telling me his secret plan was to not take the lead. I knew from that moment that he would do poorly, which turned out to be the case. How exactly are you going to win if you don't take the lead. The difference is as Kuts pointed out, between the record (running your best pace) and the competitive tactic (following). Only the race tactic is progressive and results in continued improvements.
If a runner has superior aerobic capacity, yet inferior finishing speed - he may decide to sacrifice some of his aerobic advantage by doing extra work leading the race at a fast pace - hoping that this extra work is more than offset by a reduction in his opponents finishing speed advantage.
You make the same mistake that most people do who are ignorant of this tactic, to lead at your best pace is not a disadvantate at all, because you are using your capacity to the fullest, which makes it an advantage! If you are the only person in the race who is using your capacity to the fullest, and all are of the same ability, then you are going to be the winner of the race!

Cheserek lost this race because his tactic was SO predictable. Go all out with 200 or so to go. He did it twice indoors and again in the 10k. Lawi was ready for it and when he took off it did not come as a surprise as it is supposed to. But hey that's just inexperience as a racer by Ches. Good for lalang and certainly one of the best races I've seen in a while.
