I finally understood what Rupp is lacking

I agree. Rupp could medal (or win easily) in such a race if he was mentaly confident. I don't know how much weight Salazar teaches his athletes on the mental side of a race but being capable of certain times doesn't cut it in a race with the best of the best. For instance, there are probably several guys in that race that would beat Lagat on time trials, but within the same race, Lagat has such mental instincts that he ends up medaling.

bunch of idiots commenting here. 2 years ago we were complaining that Rupp didn't have what it takes in the 5K and now we are saying doesn't have what it takes in the 3k...in a tactical race. I think that Galen is GOLDEN today more so than those he raced against. he will only get stronger the longer the distance (10K)...

Curious question - what would the discussion on Rupp look like if he had gotten 3rd and medal'd?

Mind you he might have still won a medal if Salazar had not left his best performances behind on the in training...after races.

Safe to say, I think you found Rupps worst race in many years, maybe ever?

He looked terrible with 1K to go at a slow pace even at altitude. Was he sick here?

I never saw this race, but I've never seen him run that flat except maybe PRE last year where his allergies were pretty bad. With his 4th at worlds I hadn't realized what an off year (for him) he had. Seems like there were a handful of races that were below par for him in 2013. I know people can have down years after olympics, and particularly off a big olympics but I'm wondering if Salazar didn't bump his training 10% and run the legs out of him last year.

In AlSal's wurld Rupp is like Cain--too precious.

The best strategic runners don't let a bump during a race, a tangling of feet, being cutoff, or imaginary injuries, stop them from finishing. If they fall during a race, many of the best will pop back up and hammer it home to the finish--losing is not as important as finishing what you started.

Rupp is too old to learn to be a good strategic runner--sit and kick does not count as strategic, in my opinion. Cain is young and there is some hope her racing perspective will be to finish what she started.
