Hulst's birthday was 11-28-57, which puts him in the same bind as Ritz. Start school a year early and he is younger than everyone else. Start school later and he's older. Either way his times are impressive by any standards.

Sorry for any confusion I might have caused. I meant to say that Sharsu had the soph OR 16 year old record. Apparently, it was the latter as he was young for his grade. I questioned the distance (2 mile vs 3200) because Ohio did have some tracks already converted to meters a few years early in anticipation of the change to meters, and the link someone provided was not completely accurate listing some junior bests and conversions. Thanks to all for clarification. What class and/or age rcords do Hulst & Sharsu hold presently?
Gentleman it is great for an old guy like me to see how you guys follow this sport. I ran in the mid/early seventies, out of Pa. Pre was still flying, Craig Virgin stomped all runners. Matt Centrowitz, out of power memorial, destryed us all in xc. I just wanted to mention some old dude guys. Remember we did not have the Kinney or footlocker but here is a few that would have destroyed the entire country. They are doing well. Jim Ryan Congressman. Marty liquori sub 4:00 TV olympics etc.. Matt Centrowitz has been head coach at few college programs recently I read about to monster prospects he was preparing. The greatest of all though was VIRGIN. I ran in two xc races against him. In those days it was the 2/1/2 mile..4k??? Anyway I wish you could have seen him. 4:18 or 4:19 at first mile always. It was a joke! Only guy to win two world xc I think and 2nd to seiko in marathon ..1980??? He does well his on market bus etc. lots of others ...and some top footlocker guys like Culpepper have done well. This sport never leaves me at all...Virgin just made us all take our marbles and go home...never to surface again.
I remember going to race against Manchester High School in Richmond and looking at all of the scouts who were there to see Wendy Neely run. This was before she moved to Northern Virginia to take on Erin Keogh her last two years of HS. Normally in small dual meets, the girls would line up right behind the boys and everyone would take off with the gun. But against Manchester, the girls would run first, then the boys, mostly because the Manchester boys didn't want to lose to Wendy head-to-head. We only had a couple of guys who could've beaten her on our team. I remember overhearing her dad mention that they were moving north for her junior year because that's where the good competition (meaning Erin) was. She was awesome to watch.
Zoe Nelson is running for Flathead High School in Kalispell, Montana.
You're welcome.
Alan Scharsu is in San Diego and has run 15:30 the last couple years at carlsbad. Any info on what he did after high school?
Guys,
I read some of these annuals from the so called old and Complete lists. All kind of stuff wrong, let alone literally hundreds of times and names missing...whole states missing...probably never reported. Also around 1974 they started to get rid of cinder tracks however we ran on these melted tar things. Meters meant nothing we ran 440 880 1 and 2mile. Vrey rare to know what 5000 and 10000 meant. I saw Virgin run in flats mostly! In those days flats were those big, flat addidas couple pounders. In 74 at the darn Districts meet two men had spikes in the mile, the rest had kind of bowling shoes...they were the best we had. After 75 a big change occurred everyone got spikes. I don't have to tell you guys the difference from bowling shoes on cinders to spikes on turf type tracks meant. I remember two guys sub 9:00 as sophmores in Pa. alone. If I told you guys times guys had you would not believe me. For instance, If i am lyng im dying....Virgin hit sub 4:19 in XC first mile like clockwork.....Guess what his 2 mile xc split was...do the math. All I can say was I was there and he was not the only one. We ran 2 and 1/2 for XC....If Virgin had another .6 to go for todays footlocker...take a guess.....I guess ya just had to be there.
Scharsu went on to run for Penn State. He finished as high as 4th at NCAA XC(first American). He kept UTEP from going 1-5. Coach Groves said down at Dogwood/Sea Ray Relays one time Scharsu held off Sydney Maree in the DMR on the mile leg, split 3:57. Scharsu ran Hood To Coast with other alum a few years back, and very recently ran like 24:40 for 8k I believe. Coach Groves said he is one of the most talented guys he ever saw. Many funny stories I have heard about him ( and malmo also).
Not totally accurate about Jay Marden and his last race......
I was running a 5K/10K in Monterey in late 1995, and Marden was there. He was apparently trying a "comeback" as we all seem to do. I originally planned on running the 10K and was with the lead pack that included Jay and Jose Aispuro, along with a couple of others. As we hit the 5K turn I saw everyone seemed to be running the 10, so on the spur of the moment I changed plans and turned for home. Got outkicked, damn it, but still ran 15:18..............Jay finished the 10K in a little over 32 minutes, finishing maybe fourth or so.
And is OneKeg the infamous Carl Rose of EBS "fame"?
who were the two sophs in PA to run under 9 back in the day? i know only 1 guy has ever done it at the PA state meet (mike donnelly or connelly) i think at 8:58. jerry richey may have run sub 9, but it wouldn't have been until his senior year. any and all history about PA xc and track i'd love to hear!
I believe that Calvin Gaziano did back in the early 80s........someone else may be able to check that out for sure
oops.........I thought you meant Pacific Association (N CA/Nevada), not Pennsylvania.........
actually, it never occurred to me that PA might be referring to pacific association. now i'm not sure which the original poster was referring too. i should have clarified originally.
chris spooner (lewisburg) ran an 8:56 deuce his senior year. miller woulda coulda shoulda this year. fitzgerald made such an admirable run at it in the heat, too.
why would you search for this post that hasn't had a response for 2.5 years?
Jordan Hasay is running for Mission College Prep High School.
You're welcome.
I'm pretty sure Gaziano broke 9:00 as a sophmore in 1983. Other than Hulst or Scharsu I don't know any others.
Calvin Gaziano. I think he went to Texas A and M. At the same time there was a great miler from Cali Roman Gomez. I think he went to USC. He destroyed Gaziano and the Mastilir bros at the state 1600 with a 55.0 last lap. Any one know whatever happpened to him? He was a good guy. Met him at the Keebler meet. Stood up for me when I got in a pinch with some overzealous hotel security concerning and issue I had little to do with.
A stand up guy.
aj acosta has done nothing with his life except fabricate stories for wikipedia
Roman Gomez pretty much retired early. I don't think he finished his stint at USC. He ran about 14:30 5K over there.
In high school, he won the California state mile and two mile event two years in a row which is pretty impressive. He never entered Kinney/Footlocker and didn’t take cross country very serious.
Roman Gomez was probably one of a million of talent in this country that in the right circumstances could have gone on to do great things. He might have been another Joe Falcon in the right environmnment. But he came from a rough start. He told me the one time I met him that he always had to worry what colors he was wearing when running in certain areas. Blue or Red, depending on where he was at could have meant a bullet.
The one thing that is great HS legacy is the time he was at the sart of a race and an official drops from a heart attack. Gomez simply goes over, gives him CPR, revives him, and starts and wins the race.
Legendary. (of course if its really true)
