I loved him (and Adam Sandler even more) in Punch Drunk Love. That movie is great; not the typical Adam Sandler movie. PSH does a great job playing a slimeball.

You can come on here and claim that he was "very much involved in the community" but you are just talking BS. What's the name of his foundation? Which community groups was he involved with? What philanthropic endeavors was he involved with?

I agree. Paul Thomas Anderson's casting of Adam Sandler in "Punch Drunk Love" was inspired, although it probably didn't do much for the movie at the box office, since most fans of Adam Sandler would probably hate "Punch Drunk Love," and most moviegoers who can't stand the typical Adam Sandler movie would probably avoid "Punch Drunk Love" altogether. I saw it only because I enjoyed Anderson's previous films so much.

By the way, Anderson's first film without Philip Seymour Hoffman in the cast was "There Will Be Blood," which was probably part of the reason that I didn't enjoy it as much as his earlier films. And if you've never seen Anderson's first film, "Hard Eight," then it might be fun to see the still relatively unknown PSH in a small role as an obnoxious punk at a craps table:

Addiction is a horrible, horrible thing. I'm not trying to help the addict. I'd rather focus on helping those who aren't addicts avoid becoming one. You on the other hand would like to preach acceptance of the addict life style to everyone. "Don't worry little Jimmy, if you want to shoot that junk in your veins, I'll be here for you. It's okay." This tolerant attitude leads to more addicts.

Bingo. One place I disagree. I'm not sure it leads to more addicts, but it sure as heck enables the ones who know how to play the game.

I asked to name which charities he worked with and what he did with the community and you post one article that talks about how people who lived near him.......often saw him walking on the sidewalk. Wow. That's shocking. I don't know anyone who lives in NYC who walks on the sidewalk near where he lives. The other article talks about how proud his hometown was. Another shocker.

I'll ask again, name the charities he was involved with and how he was involved with the community. Walking down the sidewalk, saying hi to people and periodically giving someone a cigarette doesn't exactly distinguish him as someone deeply involved with the community. Actually, the more I read, the more I am realizing that he was completely self absorbed and did next to nothing for others and "the community."

Compare him to someone like Ed Norton, who also lives in NYC and actually is involved in the community and bettering society (I also bet that people see him walking down the sidewalk from time-to-time):

Thanks for the info, and I think you are exactly right in your assessment of Punch Drunk Love and why it wasn't a huge box office success. Sandler was awesome in that movie. That is one of my top 10 movies for sure...just a great story and great acting all around.

Of course addiction is a disease. Medical science has shown that to be true.

However, acting on that addiction also involves conscious choice on the part of the addict. No one forced PSH to inject himself with heroin. He went out, likely on his own, and copped. He then went home and shot up.

Being a heroin addict doesn't mean that you're on autopilot and have no control over your actions. Of course the perceived need for heroin is a strong one. Incredibly strong. But to not acknowledge that there is an element of weakness involved with addiction is a slap in the face to those who have successfully overcome their addictions.

Doing illegal drugs like shooting heroin is a filthy, nasty habit. Like smoking or drinking.
