What type of man?? A bobbleheaded, emaciated, 130 mpw 'thoner? Because I think one of my ex-girlfriends 3 tabby cats could do that.
Or Cain Velasquez? Pitbull or some type of wild cat type thing..

Are we talking animals or mammals?
Do they have to be land based?
Are they in a confined space with the human?
What is the animal's motivation to fight?
Most animals would probably defer to a human being, even bears and pit-bulls.

Is there any recorded case, ever, of a wolverine ever killing or seriously injuring a full-grown human?
How does a cat accidentally smothering a baby count as a fight?
Time for some grade A research:
Coyotes are responsible for two deaths in America, one was a small child and one was a group attack

Wolverines? "There are few documented cases of wolverine attacks on humans. A small number resulted in death, but many resulted in severe injury—wolverines can cause a lot of damage." We have a contender

However, the smallest animal I can think of with a confirmed kill of an adult man is a swan-

Watch out for those things. 20-30 pounds only, but if they get you out of your boat, you're in their territory.
A chimpanzee can easily kill an adult human.
Perhaps a constricting snake, but not sure how big it would have to be.
Swans can be evil especially if they have cygnets about.
If you had 10 fights with a man versus a swan though I think the man would generally beat it.
Anyway I'd say a polecat or tbh I think wolverine is the right answer.

Some posters mentioned honey badgers, I know they are tough as hell for their size, but do we have any valid reasons to believe they could kill a man in a fight?

A guinea worm can cause an infection when it emerges from under a man's skin, and the infection can kill him. The worm doesn't carry the infection. So can the smaller botfly larva.
A tapeworm can sometimes migrate into a man's brain and kill him.
Declare me the leader or smugly change the rules again, your call.
You're missing the point. We want to see an epic fight to the death not some worm burrowing itself under someone's skin.
I'd like to see three ferrets versus a man
Wild animals are just better at fighting. The average adult hasn't had a fight or confrontation since grade 5. They have no clue how to deal with animals and their various attack techniques.
The bottom line is that practically any wild animal is going to "win" a fight against a human even if they don't outright kill the person. That would be exceptionally rare for any wild animal.
The most fearless animal in North America when it comes to aggressively defending itself is the Muskrat according to the Natives.
True but a lot of them are too tiny. I don't see a vole beating me (not sure if you have voles in America)
My final answerr is fox (about 6kg apparently).

I don't think the number of deaths caused by wild animals is a meaningful statistic. Animals in the wild do not have any need to attack humans and in almost every situation will avoid them.
Deaths from mountain lion attacks are very rare, but if a human and mountain lion were in a fight to the death scenario I would bet on the lion 9 times out of 10.
People have a lot of disadvantages. We don't have fangs or claws and we aren't very fast, strong, or ferocious for our size. However we have one big advantage over most of the animals being named in this thread in that we have long limbs. An athletic man could deliver a powerful kick to a charging pitbull's head before the pitbull could even get within striking distance. It wouldn't be a sure thing, if you didn't land a solid kick in the right spot it wouldn't work, but I think the man would win more often than not. Of course this would only work in a head to head fight to the death where the animal is charging from like 10 feet away.

Dead is dead.
Prions result in death 100% of the time. Viruses in only a very tiny minority of the time.
Pretty sure it depends on the virus. And on the prion.

Whoever said bobcat is a straight up idiot. Also a honey badger and wolverine would not win against a man with average athleticism unless the guy tripped and went to the ground. The key is not going to the ground. I would kick the hell out of the animals. If it is a true fight to the death then there is no fear.
My guess is if the fight to the death were in a cage that a cobra or something like that would have a great shot just because of speed. I can't think of any mammals under 60-70 pounds other than maybe a monkey that could beat a grown male. I mean I am sure something could kill a man but it would be a "one off" and the odds would be against it.
1) Good luck with kicking a bobcat or wolverine. You are absolutely clueless if you think you could land anything more than a glancing blow before the animal was on top of you. Sorry, but you are going to have to beat them in hand to tooth-and-claw combat. You are not beating a wolverine. You might have a chance against a bobcat (if you are not a 130 lb runner).
2) Cobra? What part of 'depending on venom, allergic reactions, etc. is not allowed' do you not understand?

Do either the animal or the human use the element of surprise or sneak attack. Are both parties aware of the contest and when it begins and ends?
An adult man is a pretty wide spectrum. A 300lb guy or MMA fighter would obviously fare better than a marathoner. Does the guy get to wear boots? Kicking ability would be essential. But if an animal can grab a relatively unprotected foot in its teeth, the man would be greatly compromised. A hiking boot or better yet, steel toe work boot will tip the scale.

The capuchin monkey charges towards the guy, jumps up, bites hin in sac and the guy just collapses in pain. Just collapses Susan. It looks from here like he is bleeding badly. We are just waiting the umpire's confirmation that he is clinically dead. He is dead and the the monkey wins. Thuuuuuuuuuuu monkey wins.
