On one hand, I've dated some genuinely good looking, intelligent women and I think I'm a decent dude.
On the other hand, the number of women I've been involved with is low, almost weirdly low, and I'm 5'7" and skinny. I have little luck casually dating women and sometimes go a long time without any action from females. I'm in a dry spell now that can rival even that of the biggest Letsrun geek.
If any posters have advice how to get a date from a decent woman, I'm genuinely interested. I've been getting soundly rejected lately. I really can't figure it out anymore.

The biggest reason most men fail with women is lack of confidence and fear of rejection. Women at the bar WANT you to go talk to them (most do at least). If you get rejected by one then go talk to another. Something most men fail to realize is that women are usually just as nervous as you are. Also, going up to talk to a girl with a wingman makes you look weak. Standing around thinking of what to say makes you look weak too. Odds are she has noticed you before you noticed her and the more time you spend thinking of a good pick up line the more she begins to think you are a puss. Always remember, if you don't go up and talk to her then it will NEVER happen. Your only chance with her is if you make a move. Don't let anything get to you and don't hold a grudge. For every girl I've slammed, I probably got rejected by a 100 others.

Yeah dude, I mean this in the most heterosexual way possible, but you are tall and in shape, which is more than most guys have going for them, and not a bad looking guy at all. Hit the gym and put on a bit of lean muscle mass. Also, what you were talking about was way over my head, but I would have tried to carry myself a little better. You sounded like you knew exactly what you were talking about, but didn't seem 100% comfortable up there. Also, if I were making a presentation, I would have worn slacks and a nice button-up shirt, not gone up there in jeans and a t-shirt, regardless of how informal the setting was.

I agree. I have seen chicks with much homlier dudes than him, but his posture and dress need work. If he is lucky (like I was) some chick will give him tips on how to dress and then he will get girls to line up for a shot.

Numbers don't mean much without context...I'll use a scale on which the prettiest 10% are a 10, and so on. Also I'm just talking about physical attractiveness, not overall desirability.
Method 1: The basis of this method is that our judgments of others are less biased than judgments about ourselves. My first girlfriend was a 10, my second was a 7, my third was a 10, my fourth was a 6, my fifth was a 2, my sixth is an 8 (current). This only counts people I dated for at least 2 months. Now, I will throw out the first one, because 'first love' is a powerful and blinding force. And the current one, because that is also hard to be objective about. Averaging the remaining, we get 6.25. Since I select these women to be my girlfriends, I might find them more attractive than a randomly chosen person, so this might be an overestimate. Also, perhaps I select partners more strongly on the basis of physical attractiveness than my partners do, leading to an overestimate, or vice versa. (I.e. maybe they just like me for my charming personality, or vice versa.)
Method 2: From the gut, I'd call myself a 7. That is when I am clean shaven... I am at best a 4 with my neck beard. Perhaps not coincidentally, I did not date anyone while I had my neckbeard.
Method 3: Asking. I asked my girlfriend just now, and she said 10/10. :)
By the way, here is another scale I think is interesting. 1 if you aren't in the top half. 2 if you aren't in the top quarter. 3 if you aren't in the top eighth. On this scale, a score of 10 is one in a thousand, and the highest score in the world is a 33. Those of you who consider yourselves to be a 10 - how would you rank yourself on this new scale?

And thanks for the advice, MJ. I appreciate it. Because I was a reporter for a long time, I'm pretty good at just walking up to women and starting a conversation. I don't have much fear there. That being said, my results are still humorously bad. Like, to the point where I can't begin to fathom where I'm going wrong. I would have thought I'd have some luck by sheer mathematical odds. I mean I'm 31 and - I'm going to confess something no Letsrunner has ever confessed - I haven't had sex in three years. How is that even possible?
I asked out a nice girl last week. We had chatted a few times and the conversations were good. I saw her downtown and we were both busy for about another hour, so I asked her if she wanted to get frozen yogurt after we had both done what we needed to do.
Her response? "Maybe."
How do you even answer maybe to that question? I was so turned off and befuddled that I left. I don't plan on talking to her again.

All you short people (less than 5,10) should not be rating yourselves above a 6, and that is being generous. Girls think of short guys in the same way that guys think of fat girls pretty much. It is a well-known fact, and this is coming from a short guy myself (5,8).
