When I was young I ran 100-mile weeks on nothing but pavement and never felt better in my life. I'm getting the miles up again but quite a bit older, fatter and slower.
I'm moving towards unstructured shoes and haven't had any problems. My last two long runs, 2.5 hours on the road, were in Asics Tiger Paws and I felt just fine.
When they say that some people have biomechanical problems and need more structure, what does that mean? What's the source of the problem? Is it a weakness that can be strengthened or an inborn irregularity?
When I started running again a few years back, I needed the most structured motion-control shoes I could find. As the years have gone by I went with less just because it was what I felt like. Now I've seen all the stuff here and I'm really going to the lightest things I can find. My lower legs gradually got stronger. If anyone asked me, I'd tell them to reduce the amount of structure in your shoes every four to six months and eventually you'll be in flats all the time.
How far should I take this? Would anyone recommend training high milage on the road in waffle racers?
