The adjusted Rupp strategy has to include taking the lead, if necessary, to keep the pace within his range. His range is something he still needs to figure out. My guess is it between 13:05 and 13:20ish.

Bottom line is Farah has a true runner's instincts. Rupp plays follow-the-leader, and does not have the same instincts.

I'm a Rupp fan, but do wish he would race more. It seems one of the things he needs to work on now is how to race, staying out of trouble, knowing when to move etc.

Hopefully he gets in a 5k and 1500 before the WCs.

Given the choice though I suppose I would prefer a medal or two at WCs rather than a few more appearances in the DL events.

TYPICAL RUPP FANBOY RESPONSE FOLLOWS:

Rupp has a coach, and their goals are Olympic Metals, National Championships in 28+min of 5k, and World Metals. They could care less about any other races, and their failed performances in those races do not count. And, please ignore Rupp's barking like a little dog during that 5k he lost to Lagat. The runner in front of Rupp, was in his way, and ran into Rupp's leg. The guy in back is not responsible for rear ending the guy in front of him.

I wouldn't be surprised in Rupp never won another global medal .....just like Mottram never did after 2005 nor Tegencamp after 2007 (when he was so close to a bronze). Everyone just easily assumes they will continue to improve (Solinsky is another example after great 2010 season) but it isn't so easy to do (no matter how many TUEs and pushing a fine line etc). In a few years we'll look back and be pretty impressed with Rupp's 10k silver and great indoor times 2013, they might just be the peak of it for Galen. Don't assume the good times automatically roll on.

Rupp has a better chance of looking at a medal, than winning a medal. The main reason is that the other runners know his strategy--the kick--and now know there are ways to beat it--thanks to Farah & Lagat. Rupp task is harder now than it was before.

I agree with your conclusion, but as you get at in the first part of your post, Rupp needs to learn how to race the 5000.

What 3:50/26:40 guy can't get higher than SEVENTH? (In a blanket 7-8-9 finish, too.)

Rojo and the guy who's visited east Africa made some smart points about over-racing (which Rupp is FAR from, obviously) and about the different financial incentives (e.g. Longosiwa needs to race every week to support his family, while Rupp gets paid well to run a 14:55 domestic 5000). Of course I acknowledge interesting and nuanced points. That's why I started the thread, moron. For a DISCUSSION.

Doha and Shanghai are super early in the season and would require a ton of travel so he really couldn't do both. Skipping them is like missing the pre-season.

Rupp is probably strongly encouraged not to race in New York, which is an Adidas meet. That's not his fault. Nike pays the bills.

Rome was a bit too close to USAs, where Rupp still has to race to qualify. Don't forget that is not a given.

Rupp could have raced in Birmingham with Farah. That's pretty much it.

So the early part of the DL is not well suited to Rupp. He'll likely get three more DL meets - Monaco, Stockholm and Zurich/Brussels.

By the way I'd love to see Rupp race a ton on the circuit next year when there are no WCs. Plus I think racing more would make him a better 5k runner, tactically.

But in terms of the 10k, which is his primary event, it doesn't matter. He has a Silver MF medal from the Olympic MF games.

Farah is only racing more than Rupp this year for MONEY$$$$ Plain and simple. Why would he run Eugene sick? And a week after flying to the UK for a road race?

Rupp is racing lightly now to prep for Moscow and the guys who race a ton early do it for money.

Yes, it is possible to write an excuse for Rupp to not run any and every race he doesn't run. This is obvious. Do you think that his rivals/betters don't have training schedules, sponsorship commitments and domestic races themselves?

Of course they do. Yet, of the legitimate contenders in the 5000, ONLY RUPP has been DUCKING the Diamond League. (OK, and the 38 year-old family man Lagat.)

Each of Rupp's rivals/betters in the 5000 could easily make excuses, too. But they don't. They RACE.

I think you're right about the Africans, who have to race much more and much faster than Rupp to get paid much less.

On Farah only racing for the money, I think you're being a moron. Didn't Farah do a ONE MILLION POUND deal with the London marathon? Whatever it was, the guy doesn't need Eugene's appearance fees. Unlike Rupp, FARAH LIKES TO RACE.

This is why Farah is a champion, and PART of why Rupp NEVER WILL BE.
