There's been a few of these and LetsRun has done a pretty good job in outing and/or reporting them. BPC31 has every right to be pissed off.

Some of the other recent ones that come to mind are Kip Litton, James Kalani, Connie Mendoza, Anne Gemkow, etc and now Surdyka in a lot more serious situation with possibly greater repercussions.

Why do they do it?

Didn't one of our top ranking USATF administrators talk about being on the ground floor of Women's distance running in this country, as an athlete, only later to be found out she was a 4+ hour marathoner?

The Olympics Jayne was speaking of was in 1980. She said IF they had a marathon, she would have been one of the top three runners. Since the Olympics were boycotted, there was no marathon. She did run in the Avon Championship Marathon in 1980, where she placed third and was informed that the top three spots would make the Olympic team. She also broke the US record that year for the marathon. She did not lie.

So does that mean a woman could say the same for 1976 or 1972?

Hey, here's an idea. All of us can try sports that aren't Olympic events, then someday if they ever get added, we can call ourselves Olympians!!!!

Or better yet, somebody can post a list of when sports were added to the Olympics, then everyone can go back and see if they could have been Olympians!!!

The Olympic Games took place in 1980 even though we (US) and some of our allies (Kenya, etc) boycotted thanks to President Carter. Can someone please provide the results of the 1980 Women's Olympic Marathon finals? No SEABEACON, you can't because the women's marathon did not exist in the 1980 Olympic Games. Therefore she lied and she lied under oath. PERIOD!!

Most trials deal in opinions by those testifying. As a lawyer you never ask questions like this with absolute answers unless you know the absolute truth. This is an example of a crappy lawyer who was not focused on the absolute truth and instead was focused on trying to make the witness more credible. After all the Olympic Games are very credible and if you are associated with the Olympic Games you in turn are viewed as credible. The problem is the witness lied under oath and said she was an Olympian. The defense should put her back on the stand, read her own testimony, discredit her and place reasonable doubt in the jury member's minds as it relates to her testimony.

The 1980 Olympic Woman's marathon did not not happen because of the boycott it did not happen because it did not exist in 1980

Did she place 3rd in the 10Km roadrace named Avon Championship Mini-Marathon or in a race of 26.2 miles named the Avon Championship Marathon?

Who told her that her 3rd place would qualify her for the OG WM and under who's authority was this message delivered?

What was her time and what was the date of the race she set the American record in 1980?

How come you know about this AR and no one else does?

I'll give you a clue Joan Benoit ran 2:31:23 on Feb third an Patti Catalano lowered it to 2:30.57 on Sept sixth both in 1980. Jackie Hansen held the record before Joanie and had since 1974, improving it in 1975. Joanie took it back from Patticat in Sept 1982.

I like Jane. As I said in an earlier post, she was a really good runner. I can even understand how some of her comments and testimony can be misconstrued. But, having said that, Seabeacon, you are out of your mind with the comments you've added to the discussion.

The only part of this that is even remotely near the truth is that she participated in the 1980 Avon International Marathon in London. As I recall, she finished fourteenth, and somewhere around tenth among the American women in the race. That was her fastest marathon, and it barely placed her among the top fifty American women in 1980.

It sorta comes across as being a possibility, especially considering the emphasis on the "IF", as if to imply she was speaking hypothetically or maybe, in her opinion, would have finished top three if only there had been a trial, etc and not speaking factually that see did finish top three. After all, everyone's entitled to an opinion.

Still doesn't explain the "an Exercise Physiologist M.A. and former Olympic athlete" though. Looks like she's been outed by someone on that site called Olympic Athlete Austin TX and someone from Casselberry FL is getting their nose out of joint about it:

I think it is absurd for Jayne Surdyka to say she was or even would have been a member of the 1980 US Olympic Team as a marathon runner even if she placed first in any marathon race prior to 1982. The woman’s marathon was not competed in the Olympics until 1984. Serious women long distance Olympic hopefuls would be focusing on running distance events that would be competed in the Olympics. The training and preparation is very different and top female 10,000 meter athletes would not even compete or train for any marathon. The competition in woman’s marathon races started changing after the event became an approved Olympic event.

Said earlier, but she was not ranked in the top 10 in 1980 (see T&F News Rankings) and even if they Did have a Team USA for the marathon, not likely that she would have made the team or an alternate.

A good solid runner, no doubt, but there were many runners going sub 2:40 by then and by all accounts she was running 2:47-48.

I just saw this. She is a good friend and I guess I wanted to believe what she told me. I am sorry that I blindly believed her because I really wanted to. But no, I am not Jayne.

Your friend is a liar. She probably lied on the witness stand, too, and misled the judge and jury. This reflects poorly on you as well.
