I think you got into the thread late. I dont know the guy, but what we were talking about was pro runners in general and that the overwhelming trend is to move up until you find where you best fit. It's. simply.how.running.works. Every HS coach from the dawn of time does this every Spring.
I was using KJ as an example. He and other ultra runners have found their niche. That's all. If he were trying to make it as a pro marathoner or 10k runner we wouldnt know his name.

Kilian Jornet sounds like a righteous brah. i don't know why people are getting so butt hurt over a guy who just loves running in the mountains.
I like running as much as the next guy, but road running doesn't really require any real skill. Most of the track/xc runners I knew either were scrawny little dudes who could not cut it at real sports or football players who wanted to get fast. At least KJ is multi-dimensional. Dude is doing what he loves, getting to travel all over the world, and making a little coin. I imagine he himself would admit that he could never break the WR marathon. Why would he want to even try?
If you really know him then you know he doesn't want to compete anymore because he does not want to be caught for doping since testing is getting better

No, no, no, no, no. No! That's just wrong. I've said it to you once and I'll say it again, not everybody is exactly the same! Not everybody thinks exactly like you. Just think about it for a minute. Maybe, just maybe, some people aren't motivated entirely by a desire for money and fame. Maybe he's perfectly happy doing what he's doing, and if so, why would he change that. In fact, if he is happy, I'd say he'd be a "fool" to switch to a totally different event which he might hate.
According to the logic of some in this thread, basically everybody would like most of all to be the 100m champ. If they can't have that, they'll try the 200/400. If they're still too slow, they'll try the 800, then 1500, etc etc. I just don't see it that way. Some people are drawn to distance running. Sure there are physiological factors involved. The fact is that no marathon champ could be a 100m champ, and no 100m champ could be a marathon champ, so they just develop a love for the events that suit them.
And it also sounds like everybody and their kid sister has beaten Matt Carpenter. All I'll say to that is, how many of them have beaten 2:01 for the ascent of Pike's Peak (which Carpenter set en route to the full marathon record)?
Did Sage Canaday in 2012? No he ran 2:21 (4th) in the Ascent only race.
Did Killian Jornet or Max King in 2012? No, they ran 2:18 and 2:29 en route to the full.
Did Uli Steidl (2:12 marathoner) in 2006? No, he ran 2:33 en route (which left him 25 minutes behind a then-42-year-old Carpenter).
You guys can twist it however you want. No these guys aren't Gebrsellasie or Bekele, but they are serious, competitive runners, and they haven't even come close to Carpenter's times. I think the mistake is in trying to "convert" the times to sea level track or marathon times. The point is, Carpenter was (and probably still is) shockingly good at running up Pike's Peak and other mountains.

I'm just going to say this: Matt Carpenter's record at Pike's Peak is amazing. He dedicated himself to that mountain (lived and trained on it for months). That should be respected. He also has the Leadville 100mi record...he is really good at altitude races. A 2:19 Marathon also usually takes some pretty serious training (at least it did for me).
Killian is also very good at altitude...I think a high Vo2max probably helps with that but obviously there are lots of variables at play with running economy, the terrain, the distance, the weather, the nature of the trail (rocky, muddy, etc). That being said i was disappointed that he didn't show up at The North Face 50 in SF or a "more runnable" race.
I don't think Killian could beat Matt Carpenter's ascent time at Pikes Peak. He had his chance this year (people said he wasn't trying so there's that -but also interesting to note is Max King came down faster than him).
But Pikes Peak isn't a joke (I learned my lesson the hard way this year after being over confident following Mt. WA).
All these ultra-trail-mountain races are a very niche part of running. At some races you could even say that it's not running anymore (thinking of something like the Hardrock 100). I respect the running events because that's all i know. I think anyone who actually kills themselves during a race (whether it's a 800m on a track or a 100km trail ultra) should be respected.

There are very few people out there that could challenge Matt's records on Pike. Well, maybe some typists, but not more than a handful who would actually be willing to line up and attempt to break his records.
