Has a lapped runner ever come back to win a race?

no way i'm going to read 5 pages of this thread because the answer is obvious:

if a marathon were run on a track, there's a good chance a lapped runner could win.

Once while I was running a marathon on a treadmill, I watched two guys racing a metric marathon on an indoor track (1500m *26.2). The eventual winner got lapped on the 77th lap, but made up the ground and passed the guy who lapped him on the last lap.

This just goes to show that the OP knows nothing about T&F. Being lapped and coming back to win is a fairly common occurance. Amongst those of us in the know we call it being "moat'ed". As in, "Dude, you so totally moated that guy at mile 23!!!"

Most 400 runners are quick enough to avoid being lapped.

But some track marathoners might not have sufficient leg velocity to avoid it, once tired.

Wrong. It is also possible a 10k runner laps the field and then pulls a hammy or breaks an ankle and can't finish.

That being said, hey OP have you ever thought about running a marathon on the track?

All this talk about lapping got me to thinking about the answer to the meaning of life as described in 'The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy.' The answer to the meaning of life is '42' but nobody knows the first question. I think the question must be...how many kilometers must one run in a metric marathon before one becomes a man? It all makes sense now, assuming the marathon is on a track.

I thought when one runs a marathon on a track, the water girls handed you champagne in cups during two mile intervals...until you got lapped.
