I've heard much about the old tests kept by Greek orgs.

But, given that decades of students have managed to get by with that system, how many of the engineers out there truly understand the material??

It seems to me like what you're saying about profs and TAs redesigning the tests is more work than its worth. Are they looking at 12, 15 years of tests per chapter/topic and redesigning a new one for each one???

Meh. It would be more impressive had she created something of value.

i tutor preps and undergrads today as a volunteer. i've never been an instructor. i consult in industry part-time. i went to school in the 1960s. in those days i used an ivory slide rule in a leather case my dad gave me when i was 11 which i still have.

people learn material differently and have values that translate grades into a variety of meanings. some need to look at worked out example after example, others only need a few examples.

some can live with Bs and Cs and carry on to the next level and get Bs and Cs all they way to graduation, others are obesessed, rightly or wrongly, with earning As and Bs at every level of a sequential program.

from my experience in engineering, math, and physics, memorizing answers will at most get you past one level of coursework WITHOUT truly understanding the material.

then at the next level, you will automatically FAIL.

i have never met one student, fellow classmate, work colleague, etc. who would say otherwise.

that's regardless of cramster.com, file cabinets of mid-terms and finals, crib notes, etc.

It's not just memorizing questioms. Looking at old tests gives you an idea of what material a prof usually tests, and any weird tricky questions he likes to ask.

test panels influence so heavily, profs are often swayed to use the panel's reccomendations especially at 2 years and states.

at uc's some profs aren't even around much and don't care, they let TA's and panels decide.

realize also the catalog has so many courses for a given department, that many times there is not one guy on staff who has ever taught the course in his career.

in which case the panel is really necessary to craft the mid-terms and finals.

Good for her. But I hate how OP insinuates that anyone who has an engineering degree thinks they're a big shot. It's just a degree. I bet most engineers don't have an ego.

For those of y'all making a big deal of $300K a year, keep in mind that's not really a lot.

I made $360,000 last year after taxes.

That's $30,000 a month.

I put away $10,000/month in my retirement funds / investments.

We only have 3 cars between the 4 of us - I make our two teenagers share one. Monthly costs for the cars = $4000.

Education for the two = 2 X $3500/month = $7000

Food/groceries = $2000/month

Phone bills/ TV / internet = $1000/month

Golf club/ health club memberships = $1000/month

Entertainment / dining out = $1000/month

Clothing/ shoes/ miscellaneous = $1000/month

Total = $27,000.

So I'm only left with $3000 a month which is not a lot by any standards.

That's why it's newsworhy - because it's the EXCEPTION. Most lifelong fast food workers will have a sh&tty, poverty stricken existence.

Some good comments on this thread.

Engineers do have egos amongst themselves, and relative to non-engineer support staff at engineering firms...but their knees tend to buckle when they run into a lawyer or a business manager, firstly because they are uncomfortable operating outside their area of knowledge (as are most people), and secondly because in practice, engineers are always answerable to those other 2 groups, regardless of whether or not the engineer is "correct" in applying his/her professional judgment, they must answer the questions posed, and live with the decisions rendered.

The girl at chipotle is one example out of how many non-degree'd people working in the fast food industry? It's great what she did but overall she's one out of over several million. I'm not saying she isn't good at what she does but her moving up has more to do with luck and being at the right place at the right time than her skills. There are more qualified people who will never make it past shift or store manager that won't be as lucky.

bfd. the small company i'm at has 3 physicists, 4 chme's and 2 sw-only engrs and our avg take is $300,000 per year plus founders stock. of course most of us hit it big in past startups. we work in mil spec so we are all u.s. citizens, 2/3ds foreign born.

$300k is ludicrous, but $80k is low. Most engineers I know here in Houston make over $100k with 5+ years experience. I make $130k to $140k including overtime and bonus. I have a masters and 5 years experience.

First of all, I'd like to know where these engineers are making 300K+?

supply/demand governs salaries/options

known areas won't get the big numbers

you have to do r&d in frontier areas to get the big numbers

re-enter school or self learn

schoomze at r&d conferences & basic-r conferences

become a part of the solution

become known

i've done this several times over my career

this is not new atall and has been done since the cave man

I just graduated with a computer science degree and i like the big ones all day and all night
