As for trying to pour out a can to test the pour speed, can't do a test on your cans as our cans are 500ml not 350ml. Still took less than 8 seconds to pour out.

I did my first beer mile this spring. First race I've ever DNF. I learned it's more about the drinking than running and that Budweiser was a bad choice. Like any rookie, I thought it would be easy and I started too fast. The worst part was that I quit with only 1/4 of my last beer and 1 lap to go. My stomach couldn't hold any more and I couldn't get myself to throw up. It was painful!

From that event, I can promise it is impossible to drink beer from any native unaltered container (glass or cans) in less than 8 seconds.

Over here, glass refers to bottles, as opposed to cans, especially when it is already juxtaposed with cans. I don't think they haul a keg out to the track for the beer mile and set up their pours in advance.

I think you limeys have much wider pull-tabs than we do. Ours are these puny things. A straight pour doesn't let air in fast enough to pour smoothly.

I know that tampering with a can or shotgunning is not allowed, I've done a beer mile myself using Budweiser cans. It's about how you tilt the can and when I open it I push the tab back quick. The opening/tab combined with the actual chug I think would take closer to 6 maybe 5. Bottles are definitely easier, for me at least, those might be able to dip under 5. But a can under 5 is tough if not impossible using most cans. The coors light can is an exception, never seen a coors original. So eight seconds isn't that bad, but there is much room for improvement

Where is the proof? You can't just self-report a record on the internet, and then it's a record.

They were discussing this on the most listened to radio program in Southern California at the 08:00 hour when tons of people are listening to the radio in their car.

He got a lot of publicity for the beer mile.

Impressive results. A 5:19 beer mile and 1:42 800 is a very good year.

Hi guys, I do love a good Chunder Mile v Beer Mile debate.

I am the hero (words of many others, i'm merely quoting) who ran 5m08.7 for the Chunder Mile in the UK.

Here is my summary:

The Chunder Mile is 'harder' physically but I can see how it can 'potentially' be faster by potentially being physically being able to down the pint faster than the can on a one off effort.... but that's also assuming that the extra volume, pain and need for sickness has negligible effect..... which it clearly does.

Its 12 fluid ounces for a can and 20fl.oz for a pint. so over all its 48fl.oz to 80fl.oz.... effectively they do just under 2.5 pints in BM.

In the CM one of the main difficulties is the pain of the volume in you and you are obviously going to be sick from drinking that volume so I think that it's an irrelevant point that sickness is allowed as most are only sick on the last lap or 3rd lap a bit but thats already after extra volume in a shorter space of time than with cans..... And then having to run while being sick and fearing death by choking - so again this should slow the CM time.

I videoed necking a can of coke the other day at first attempt and thats just under 10secs.... with practice i'm sure that could be 7/8 but defo slower than a pint which at best I will do around 6secs..... but thats for 1 can/pint.... im sure chug time for the can volume would remain pretty constant since theres not much volume whearas the drop off time in pint necking is substantial! I think I was 7s (63), 13s (67), 14s (69), 15s (60)......5m08

I was not impressed with the downing of beers from NS, lots of stops for breaths etc rather than just smashing it down like beer was the new air.

I conclude that with less volume I'd have lapped quicker (wouldn't have needed to ease off so much to catch breath or to not choke) and that necking time would be similar/negligible difference or if anything quicker in BM after 1st can. So I think it would have been a Sub-5 BM.

I also more importantly think that the great Chunder Milers could all make a very smooth transition to world's best Beer Milers, however, the best Beer Milers would probably lose 30-60+ seconds the other way around.

Is a chunder mile done with naturally carbonated real ales? Lower carbonation would help a lot in a chunder/beer mile.

But I can assure you it's carbonation or DQ!

5% carbonated larger/beer/cider combo. Will Clarkes fastest time for example is greatly disputed due to using a flat drink as his first pint as he was peer pressured last minute and didn't have a 4th pint to hand!

Oh, I know, but I live in Colorado, so it is unnecessary. Chunder mile? Bah! Where I went to school, we did a 4 mile Chunder race.

I agree. If I were Nick, I'd be running some track races in Europe instead of wasting my time running a beer mile. Maybe he is mentally burned out right now and needs some time off from racing after his big 800m pr at the Olympics? Even if he is mentally fatigued, I am surprised he isn't out there running 1500m races or some other distance other than 800m.

A beer mile is not classy. I am not a prude, or anything like that. I just think a beer mile smacks of alcoholism and drunk and disorderliness -- most finishes end up puking etc.

It is a real low class deal.

Athletics and drinking should not really be mixed. I know it sounds funny and all that -- but someday someone could get hurt, injured, or killed from it.
