FERNANDEZ 3:37

Wow, 25 people with faster times. It's going to be a huge task just making it to the final. If one is going to blow their wad and get an Olympic A-standard, it would make sense to do it in one of the heats. However, I just don't think any of the athletes who don't already have the A-standard are in good enough shape to do that AND make the top 3 in the final. If anyone pulled it off, it would be amazing.

German is amazing, but he just doesn't have the base he needs right now. If he gets signed to a contract, the smart thing would be to focus on getting a solid year of injury-free training under his belt and do some great things in 2013, focusing on the 5000.

Wrong. Run 3:39 and you are in.

Right now Webb would easily beat Fernandez. A 3:37 would be good in the era of Lunn and Jennings back in the early 2000s. There is so much more talent now that Fernandez is a long shot to make the team. Fernandez will be far more competitive at the NCAA level. Basically, that is what he is; a top notch NCAA runner. However, NCAA distance running compared to elite international running is double AA minor league level.

I am hoping Fernandez makes the Olympic trials finals.

Best chance for German and the non-A-standard guys to qualify is to get through the first round, take out the semifinals hard and hope you hold on for an A-standard and placing. In the finals, hope you body has recovered and the pace goes out slow enough that you have a chance. Anybody taking it out hard in the finals will get eaten up with kickers like Manzano, Wheating and Co. hanging around.

In addition, if they are going to have 3 rounds with only 30 runners, they need to increase the field size or get rid of a round.

German Fernandez wants his name to be German, not herman, or anything else. Is it really that complicated? How do you know he leaves the accent out for that reason? Here's a crazy idea, maybe that's the way its supposed to be pronounced, without the accent. His name is Americanized.

Since when is a 3:37 a time to get excited about? Unless he takes a full 2 seconds off that time he has little or no chance of going to the Olympics.

Any race that goes out slow will leave German in the back by the finish.

He needs to always run to his talents and strengths, which means keeping the pace fast all the way.

(1) When someone has demonstrated a great deal of talent, is just coming back from numerous setbacks and 3:37 is faster than they have ever run before

Well he improved by 2 seconds in one day so he has an excellent chance of dropping some more time in a week.

I don't get how people just assume Fernandez has no speed because he hasn't run any 800s.

Rupp had 13:37 endurance in high school and yet had a hard time breaking 4:00 for most of his college career. And then he ran a 1:49 indoors his senior year and has subsequently run 3:34 for 1500.

Fernandez ran a 3:55 alone as an 18 year old (and probably had at least 3:52-53 ability that season). If he did primarily mid-distance training he would definitely be able to get down around 1:46 for 800, which is plenty fast for miler with his endurance.

I could see him running very fast for 1500 in the future. The boy has wheels even if he doesn't run under distance races.
