Spartan runner says he can break 2 hours in the marathon

I agree with this in part: we need more people saying they can compete at the top level and being confident in their ability. I draw a line when the comment becomes unrealistic.It's also disparaging to the guy who is on the cusp of trying to break 2:10/2:15/2:20 while dredging through years of legitimate races. A layman reads this article, looks at our current crop of 2:10+ guys, and figures, after comparison with this chump, that they suck. This trickles down to a decline in american public interest and becomes a detriment to our top runners. We didn't shoot-off to Mars before landing on the moon.

Since he claims that 2:16 on that downhill course as his PR, I bet he's talking about running sub-2 on a downhill course. I still don't think he could get close even if he went uninjured for years and didn't have to work for a living. I think some top Kenyans could go sub-2 on a downhill course like Saint George or Top of Utah, but that doesn't mean anything. Didn't Steve Scott run something like a 3:30 downhill mile once?

While a Navy SEAL I did some jumps from 10,000 meters. It took me less than 2 minutes to hit the ground. This makes me a world record holder, right?

Why not give him a shot? He's got some good credentials. His world record is astonishing.

This is equivalent to someone running 12:13 5k (3:56 pace) with regards to how much faster it would have to be relative to WR pace.

Unless he has some insane drugs/genetic modifications up his sleeve to bust out I don't think it's even remotely possible right now for ANY runner that has lived yet, and certainly not a 34 year old 2:16 guy.

As a 58 year old, former 2:44 marathon runner, and a fan of the sport, I am enormously proud of the current generation, including Ritz, Hall, Rupp and others; who are going head to head with the greatest athletes in the world and giving them everything they've got, and making no excuses.Then there are those who talk about what they could do if only someone gave them money. Meanwhile, Kenyan athletes are going up to the mountains, erecting shacks, and training all dayk, and you don't hear a whimper from them about how this or that corporation is not sponsoring them. Because most people who will buy his autobiography and attend his speeches about success will not know the the difference between a 2:16 and a 2:00.
