This guy comes across as very genuine in these flotrack interviews. Definitely rooting for him. It's amazing that only 4 months ago he was finally able to run 2 ~60 second quarters since spring 2010 (and that his 400 PR at this point since was 60.5?). Amazing that he was able to run a 4:02 a month later. I like how he thanked his coach for the training foresight - "if not I'd be doing hard quarters every day."

I think Kyle's strategy is pretty obvious, then: get the "A" standard in the *opening* round at the Trials; "rest" with a just-good-enough-to-advance semi; then run the usual tactical final and blow everyone away in the homestraight. I'm really surprised that no one else has suggested this, though maybe it's too obvious.
Of course, the problem will be drawing the same opening-round heat as Nick Willis...

Willis doesn't do the US trials.
The wet track was probably worth 0.5-1.0 seconds.

in 2008 Carrie Tollefson won the trials and Suzy Favor skipped it thinking her "A" standard got her in. She was wrong. Tollefson didn't have either standard but got the "B" in Europe after the trials, which bumped Suzy. Tollefson never got the "A" that would have let Suzy back in. So you used to be able to get the standard AFTER the trials.
