I think the lawyer response to what you said would be that you're arguing facts that are not in evidence. Fernandez may be one of the most popular runners on this board. But I doubt he's that well known by the general public. I would think that Hall, Meb, Goucher, Lagat, Rupp, Solinsky, Flanagan, and others are far more well known than Fernandez.

I think he ended up out of the sport at age 25 because he didn't have a passion for it and was probably being offered slave wages at that point and had big $$ at air bnb.
My point isn't that it didn't work out well for him. My point is the shoe companies shouldn't have offered him big $$$$ to go pro early.
But again, back then, everything revolved around Webb. Webb was such a name - a potential webb slayer was worth something.

Now did Matt go back to school this fall, under his scholarship plan, receiving preferential seating for his classes knowing he was going to leave the team? Had he been injured, the school would have continued to pay his education while providing rehab treatments. No, he's not the first or last athlete to leave early to pursue a pro career without fulfilling the contract signed in his scholarship. Basketball and football players do it more frequently these days. Given the high cost of an education, isn't accepting a full-ride scholarship tantamount to being a pro?
Actually he was offered a spot on Letterman but Dave Smith turned it down because he didn't want to put anymore pressure on him. I think this was after his 3:55, but I don't remember for sure.
this article goes into a little detail about the decision with info from both jr and sr. It says he will still work with powell.

Financially it seems like a no-brainer for the kid to turn pro. What more could he do in college to increase his value?
A whole different discussion is how much money German Fernandez cost himself by not going pro after winning NCAAs as a freshman.

How about you just pause and appreciate fully what Centro did in his college career, and how he took good time and consideration before making his decision.

I can tell you for a FACT that Nike makes no effort, zero, zilch, nada, to keep Ducks from going pro "early."
If they were caught in one, just one, half sentence, one communication to that effect -- there would be massive lawsuits by athlete/family, and the NCAA.
I've been in the room, the concept you write about -- NEVER is talked about, or mentioned.
Nike helps the school, and keeps their mouths shut about the rest -- even if they thought that, even if Uncle Phil wanted it...which he doesn't...nothing could be said or done by Nike, far, far, FAR too risky.
And those things are never floated or discussed. You are jaded, paranoid, uninformed, and immature beyond belief.
