Had a really good first xc race junior year in college after 14 months of injuries......drank everything in sight that night....almost died.....ran 125 miles that following week (at altitude) and did not feel sober again until mile 95.........moral of the story is....high mileage plus heavy drinking can kill ya

If you haven't lost count the number of times you've thrown up, you aren't an alcoholic.
Only really been all that drunk once. Based on the calculators, I was somewhere around a .2 and I puked my guts out shortly thereafter. Prior to that, I doubt I would've broken .10 more than twice. After the .2 puking incident, I have had no interest in alcohol. It's really not that fun to lose control of your body and the next morning makes it not worthwhile. Also, if most of the drinking was red wine, you end up puking, and you're still drunk when you puke, it makes you think you're puking blood, which is very scary.
I once blew a 4.0.

Again, people can drink responsibly and not get drunk and have alcohol ruin their lives. Obviously your grandfather couldn't but a lot of people can. Countless studies have been done showing the benefits of moderate alcohol consumption. I say this all as someone who can't just have one beer and doesn't drink anymore. But others can and it is ridiculous to cast judgement about alcohol and all who drink it because a few people let it ruin their lives.
I understand what you're saying, and it is true that 99% of people can (usually) drink responsibly. However, given my family history (and there is more alcoholism--though not as bad-on my da'd side of the family) I don't think it is a wise thing for me to do. I love my life and have a perfectly good time now without it, so I don't really see why I should start.
As for the person who said "you're only 20" and I don't "have a lot of experiences" and "how do you draw your conclusions without having tried it"....well I knew someone would say that. But as I just said before (and this is only for me, NOT everyone)...I have really bad alcoholism on my mom's side of the family, moderatley bad alcoholism on my dad's side of the family, and I don't really want to drink it. It isn't going to help me necessarily in any way (yes, I've heard of the benefits of red wine, but probably nothing that you couldn't get by changing your diet/lifestyle in other ways), so for me to start drinking would just be stupid.
But, that is just for me. For those of you who can enjoy it responsibly, that is good for you all.

Depends on the locality. In some places a breathalyzer test would be routine for any arrest for public intoxication.
If someone passed out and was picked up by EMTs, a breathalyzer could be administered to confirm that it was alcohol that caused the "outage."
And yes, I realize that if you're *still* unconscious after they start working on you, you won't be blowing a Breathalyzer...

That's funny! A crying shame, but I can empathize.
I never liked the "if it affects your life negatively in any way, you are an alcoholic, whether you drink a case of beer a day or just 1." I've known alcoholics who are totally dependent on booze but are successful or even thriving in life.
I believe in the strict sense "alcoholism" is the physical dependence to alcohol where if one were to suddenly stop drinking, tremors, seizures, and other withdrawal symptoms would develop.
More generally, I believe alcoholism is a physical OR MENTAL dependence to alcohol in which one does not have the ability to control or curtail his or her pattern of drinking.
I am an alcoholic myself, although I consider myself slightly reformed in that I only drink on the weekends, and at home. But I find myself unable to NOT drink on the weekends. I have a mental addiction still and am unable to control the pattern of my drinking. I am not physically addicted and my life is going reasonably well, but I am still an alcoholic.
I don't know what the my highest BAC was, but after the night when I threw up all over the interior of my car (which a friend was driving - fortunately), passed out on the floor of my apartment, and then had to clean out the interior of my car the next afternoon in the apartment parking lot in 90 weather while occasionally puking and having to lie down on the grass in the shade, I have limited myself to a couple of drinks per evening.
Does anyone else puke only the morning after drinking too much? I have certainly had plenty of instances where I've drank too much, but in almost all those cases, I puke the morning after. It's the worst thing - I hate it, and now In my late-30s I've come to realize how stupid it is to drink enough to get to that point.
