I'm not a coach, just another big fan of running but let me tell you what really impressed me lately and gave me hope for American runners. The 2 mile race of the 33rd Hartford Public Invitational earlier this month. From the Hartford Courant newpaper article:
"Ahmed Haji of Conard-West Hartford chatted up this race at the National Foot Locker Cross Country Championship last November. Runners from Boston down to Virginia continued to chat online through the winter. Gras, from Belmont, Mass., would spin through his AOL instant messenger. Barnicle said there were posts on the DyeStat.com running site. Gavin Coombs of Griswold pushed for the race.
How good was this 2-mile field? Coombs, the national indoor champion at 3,200 meters, was seeded fifth.
"Probably the best field ever assembled in the Northeast," Coombs said.
So here they were, runners like Penn Relays mile winner Chris Spooner from Lewisburg, Pa., awaiting the gun. Haji, whose family had come from war-torn Somalia, came this day to break 9 minutes. Coombs came to run 8:50..."
To me, that's what it needs to be. Young guys looking for competition. Looking to better themselves. Looking to go above and beyond what their high school schedules had planned. Excitement and potential have to be ingredients.
