Looking at the splits, Gotcher ran the last 12k at about 6:20 pace. He must have been hurting.
Very impressive breakthrough for Rothstein.
I think this is Arcianaga's 2nd time running 2:11, the other time being San Diego. I remember a letsrun article saying that it's hard to hold out high hopes for a guy like this getting down much below 2:11 given that he's a 14:xx 5k guy and his half-marathon isn't that great either. Seems to be playing out unfortunately.
Although based on the top Americans' performance at NYC, 2:11 could make our team. Unfortunately. Gotcher's performance today doesn't add much hope either. We can still hope things turn around though---Hall under new coaching, Trafeh and Smyth making debuts at London (did I read they are going for 2:06 and 2:10 there---crazy debut goals, although remember Kenyans debut in 2:05-2:07 if they prepare properly), Ritz and Gotcher not looking great right now but may come around by 2012.

I didn't get a chance to actually watch the race...Since Arciniaga had his mind set on pacing today, I wonder how much Gotcher held him back. I'm pretty sure Nick slowed up with Brett when he started fading just to see if Brett could find a second wind and pick it up again. So what I'm basically saying is that Arciniaga could have at least dipped under 2:11 had he not been in the "rabbiting" mindset.

“We had some really great performances, certainly Nick and Stephanie,” McMillan told Race Results Weekly in an exclusive interview. We had two of our debut athletes [Emily Harrison and Natasha Labeaud] get their Olympic Trials qualifying standards –that set them up for next year– and then some rough ones as well.” He continued: “Overall, I guess like the usual finish line when you bring seven or eight people… some people are going to have good days and some less good.” Arciniaga’s performance was the most surprising to McMillan, who called his athlete a “Steady-Eddy marathoner.” Arciniaga had not done a full marathon training program, and had only planned to run 25 kilometers with Gotcher.
McMillan gave Arciniaga permission to go to the finish line if he felt good, but the athlete tried to keep that out of his mind in the first half of the race. “I tried not to think about finishing until 25-K,” Arciniaga told Race Results Weekly. “It’s less pressure.” Ticking off 4:55 miles (3:03 kilometers), Arciniaga led Gotcher through half-way in 1:04:17, then continued with him until 25 km at the same pace. At that point, Arciniaga decided to pull back because the pace was just a little too fast for him. “At 25-K I let Brett go,” Arciniaga explained. “I was at my limit.” He decided to run a couple of more miles to see how he felt. He said to himself that if the next mile was 5:20 he’d drop out. Instead, it was “exactly 5:05″ and he still felt good.
The following mile was similar, and he decided to keep going. Soon he would catch Gotcher. “I ended up bringing Brett back at mile 20,” he said. Arciniaga soldiered on alone, catching the flagging Kenyan Wilfred Murgor with about 400 meters to go to pick up second place and $17,000 in prize money.

This could be the 2:08 guy we really need on our team (and hopefully a couple of these 12:55-13:20 5k types can get their acts together and join him.

Hmmn.....Anything suspicious about using a toilet a few hundred meters before winning a marathon, where you will be escorted every second of the way to the drug testing facilities once you cross the finish line? Not accusing him of anything, but is it possible the toilet break could have been used to dispose of anything illicit?
