Football also spends the most money and xc and track spend the least. The meets the team hosts pay for most if not all the teams expenses. Also football is given multitudes of free shoes, jerseys, practice jerseys, shirts, sweat pants and hoody, tuition, etc. The cross team has 2 scholarships. The school doesn't even pay for an entire shoe. And other than the shorts everything that is given is to be returned to the school.

We are wasting money on these athletes that play football. Maybe 1 of the 103 players will go pro, MAYBE 1! None of them will ever play football after college. And half of them won't have jobs because they will never graduate with their 1.2 GPA. Bernard and the rest of the AD office is only babying these student/athletes, and when I say student I use that lightly.

Please lets continue with other Delaware Teams:

Men's Basketball - The Finest Team next to football, thier only problem is they can't put any fans in the seats. The Cross Country meets probably have more people than they have at their game. Their only fan base is the pep band and they are forced to go. No student wants to sit threw them losing ever game. They are top dog in the CAA every year as you can see below...

Great info! Maybe but is that net profit or gross profit? I'd assume it to be gross because looking at schools near me I find it hard to believe small D1 and D3 programs are banking 250-500K a year.

Its aggravating to read people taking shots at Fisch the day after the men's team gets cut especially when they are too big a pussy to put their real name. Also its stupid when people speculate about people getting scholarships at other schools when they are not on scholarship at Delaware in the first place. If the team has(had) two scholarships now for xc that is two more than they had when we were there. I dont know if I believe that they have two dedicated xc scholarships.

I certainly never heard of anyone being on scholarship when I was there. I remember once in the locker room my freshman or soph year someone was like "Hey coach why dont we have any scholarships" and he was like "We're closer to getting cut(as a sport) then getting scholarships". That was close to 20 years ago. That shows the institutional culture in the upper levels of the athletic department. Honestly its impressive that the team has survived as long as it has.

As far as being competitve in the CAA, do people think that Delaware can beat William and Mary? They are a top 10-15 team in the nation. You cannot get to that level without scholarships. Do people not comprehend that? Without scholarships you get people like me- a 10:18/17:40s HS runner. We had a great group of 8 freshmen come in my freshmen year that i was near the back of but still there were probably only two guys under 10 minutes in HS and a couple more in the high 420s/430 range in the mile. Our superstar stud of the class had run something like 935. For W+M those are people they dont even look at in recruiting.

Also he has won several conference titles in track- we got 3 while I was there 1 indoor and 2 outdoor and there were 2-3 football players on those teams and Wade the incredible thrower I would imagine was on some kind of scholarship. Funny how that works out eh? When you have scholarship athletes on your team it sure helps to compete especially when the other teams have them too.

In terms of improvment- all of these people were from my class and off the top of my head we had a 2:01 HSer run 1:51, a 4:28 guy do 3:51 and 8:25 3k(those two were twins),the 9:35 guy ran 30:08/14:30 and won IC4As when it was a bit more than a JV meet, a 10:05ish HS guy who didnt even win anything in Delaware state meets run 14:42 and be the best guy on the team in cross for two years and I went from 10:18 to 9:25 and 17:30s to 15:22- and there was another guy who "only" went from high 9s in HS to like 1530 because he was sick all the time his last two years. This is not terrible coaching at least not in my book. Obviously none of these times are competitive on the national/regional level but when you start out at a certain level it is nice to imagine that you can run 13:30 but the reality is you cant.

To the current people on the team dont let this stupid bullshit deter you from finishing your career- I have no idea but I would imagine the vast majority have no scholarship and can still stay and compete unattached if they want. Obviously soon it will kill off even the mens club team I would imagine but hopefully not- at least for the in state guys perhaps that could be an option.

A damn shame what has happened to my alma mater. This state has plenty of money socked away, and plenty of people they can tap into for things they need. No reason for this.

I blame the mindless football mentality at this place, and total DB of a football coach they now have, that one time wonder, who couldn't win a second big game if his life depended on it. The Mack Brown of the FCS. All bluster, taking all the underfunded other sports down with him. Wonder why he isn't getting any offers from big schools?

Sorry to hear UD is loosing the xc/track programs. I ran for Drexel back before that program was also cut and I have fond memories competing again Delaware. We always got a little more fired up when we knew we were in a race against them.

I'm still waiting for Drexel to bring back their program and protest with my wallet. Whenever the school is looking for money I tell them to call me back when they bring track/xc back.

I thought this might be national news since the Obama Administration's Department of Education rolled back Bush-era options last April, 2010 that might have led to this.

Vice President Biden made the announcement and called the changes a no-brainer. The changes reversed survey options for universities to use to determine participation taking into account that more males want to participate in sports than females.

Since Biden is a Delaware alumnus and former senator it would be interesting to hear what he thinks of his alma mater dropping men's XC and Track.

I understand that Bernard Muir was on a Gender Equality Committee at Notre Dame, too. I'm not sure what the circumstances were around his leaving Georgetown.

This suck for college distaner runner trying to make a name for themseleves in the world of college athlitics when Football & Baseball get all of media's press. Also, I think it suck that they sent an e-mail to the runners and not talk them directly

You obviously either never ran under Fischer or if you did you sucked and got worse while at UD. There are two kinds of run that come through the University of Delaware XC/TF program...

The first kind is people who don't care what Fischer has to say and his coaching style. These athletes are the ones who normally go off and do their own workouts thinking they are smarter than a guys who has more years of experience than these kids have lived. Theses are the kids that never heard of "trusting in the program". And these are the kids that go and bad mouth a GREAT coach and blame him for their lack of improvement and motivation. They would rather go get drunk every weekend than show up to long runs or 6:30am tempo runs. Jim Fischer is a different breed of coach that many aren't use to. He teaches his athletes to be independent and think for themselves. He gives them the building blocks and lets them choose how to build themselves up.

The second kind of runner is the one that listens to Fischer, takes his advise, and sees success. Delawares top 4 runners this year for XC are prime examples. Bonnevie, Feeney, Vincent, and Weaver all have improved drastically since high school. They all believe in his program and have had success. Mike D also is a strong believer in Fischer. If he wanted another coach he could have found someone else, but he didn't. Mike D went from being a 4:35 or 4:40 miler in high school to a US Trials participant. When did he see improvement? Under what coach did he see improvement? O that's right Jim F-ing Fischer.

A lot of people think Fischer is a bad coach for not recruiting but honestly how is he suppose to recruit kids from out of state or even in state without some sort of scholarship money to offer.

There are a lot of bone heads like El Chilar that don't know what they are talking about and are probably just an average running that gets beat regularly by college kids that Jim Fischer coaches and are just salty about it. There are a lot of people that make the claim that Fischer burns his athletes out. This is a false statement also. Fischer pushes recovery and for his athletes to listen to their bodies. The athletes that get "burnout" are the ones that choose not to do enough summer training, those who train like idiots, and those who choose to do the opposite of what Fischer says because their high school coach had them doing something else.

So El Chilar stop talking out of your ass about things you don't know and going off of hear say. Best of luck this spring in trying to beat Delaware runners but you shouldn't need luck since they are only coached by the worst coach in the world.

Another problem with the UD football team is that it doesn't even operate with a profit.

On another note, one of the things the AD said at the meeting that really pissed me off was that because other schools in the conference had already removed their XC and TF programs it justifies the removal of our team. Just because "everyone else is doing it" doesn't mean we should too.

To be fair, Delaware can be looked at as an underachieving team in some regards. And the team does get a little bit of scholarship money now, but it isn't much. I don't believe, however, that these cuts were made due to the level of team competition. I think it mostly had to do with monetary convenience and Title IX was useful in this situation for the administration to gain that advantage. To put it bluntly, compared to other teams in the school, the track team is probably mediocre in terms of competitiveness. But like someone else said, there are worse teams at the school that I'm sure spend much more money.

The guys taking shots at the team in this thread are (unfortunately) either members of our own team who don't fully understand what is going on, or outsiders who don't understand the logistics of trying to create a competitive team in a small state at a school that doesn't care about its running programs.

Let me back up. Someone named a few members of the team that are "the only ones who aren't a joke." A lot of people don't understand that when it comes to talent, this team doesn't generate much in terms of high school recruitment. I would say that 60-70% of the guys who want to run for this team come from Delaware high schools and hope to walk on. No disrespect to those guys, but the talent pool isn't huge when it comes to Delaware high schools. Needless to say, the team has MANY guys whose running goals fall more into the category of "improve a lot and maybe compete on the D-I level the last couple years of my career," as opposed to "I better make NCAA's this year or I'm a failure." For many Letsrun posters I'm sure that idea doesn't make any sense.

Yes, there are recruited athletes. But there aren't many and none of them would ever be recruited by the top schools even in our conference. The level of success in this program has always been defined by improvement. In a lot of cases it comes down to the improvement of athletes that most schools would overlook altogether. I could go on, but I really don't think this was about the competitive level of the team. It's not like the team was competitive on a national level 10 years ago and then went to shit. The team has also improved drastically in the last 4-5 years compared to where it was for what it's worth.
