Viren was the best in the world and thus the best in the race. Viren fell with more than 5,000 meters left in the race. The race was the Olympic 10,000. Rupp was running to break 13 minutes. At best, he was sixth or seventh in the race. He fell with 1,000 meters left. It was one race among many. What would have been gained by getting up and finishing in 13:10? Do you know how hard Rupp fell relative to Viren?

Correct, AFTER, not right then, not immediately after, but after. After they knew he was all good, at least good enough to workout. How much time do you think he had to make that assessment as to wether he was fine to continue racing? A split second is too long because he wasn't out there finish behind all the contenders in 13:10 with an * next to it. He was in the race to compete at the top level and when that was wiped out so was the purpose of running around that track with a bib on, which now ripped off. It doesn't matter. Rupp quit. I realize this is hard for you to grasp. Quitting is quitting. Society rewards those who do not quit and can quickly solve a problem under difficult circumstances. This is the part of Rupp's character he needs to work on, real hard. Step 1 = Finish what you start.

Well, Viren the (blood-packed) favorite, with 20 or so laps remaining and where the objective of the whole season is that race (along with the 5000) the situations are not remotely comparable.
You only get to race really high level efforts a few times a season. Getting up 5+ seconds down with possible injury so that you cannot reach your objective (13 minutes) is the right decision in my mind.
He did not do what Tegenkamp did in that one 3000 where the effort was so hard he punted (he was at 5:00 @ 2000m, and 5:31 @ 3200m but was blowing up and just stepped off the track -- race was won in ~7:27, one of the best times in the last five years, especially for runners not named K. Bekele. Much regretted stepping off; the training group has probably discussed this race.

The funny thing is your concept is right except you are thinking small, and society rewards thinking small with small rewards. Rupp quickly solved his problem by thinking big, not small.
Rupp is thinking big, and that is why he does the big things and gets the big rewards. It's also because he works with big minds, not small ones.

Again, there is thinking small, which you are a perfect example of and thinking big, which is what very few people do around here.
The small thinkers look down and focus on something small and specific, never able to grasp the big picture which involves all the various factors going on around them, and knowing how to interpret and incorporate those things for the end goal. The small thinker keeps talking about the small objective when the big thinker is moving on, moving toward the big prize. The example is smacking you dab in the face now and you can't recognize it. And I bet you wonder why you never had two years that matched the consistency and progression that rupp has had for the past 8 in a row.

Can you provide an example prior to this race of Rupp 'giving up?' A single aberration in his racing career doesn't speak to me of "part of Rupp's character he needs to work on."

How did I miss that? You know I still wouldn't condemn this, Kenyans often do it when they know it's not going to happen on the day, or they just shut down and jog in. It's kind of all or nothing since everything inbetween counts for sh%t in their minds. Not saying wrong or right, but understandable when you think about what they are out to achieve.
I don't know what happened to Rupp this time but at least he PR'd and finished the race. The Rupp crowd will have to wait one more year until he breaks 13:00.
Solinksy looked way more competitive this time even though he ran 1 sec slower. The big question is whether he will move up in distance based on this performance?
