3/4ths in 5:00 is a massive curveball to the equation.
time and time again the most fit athlete has found themselves breaking the tape, slow pace or fast pace.

At 200 metres to go the clock reads 22:06.43 and Lagat is leading by a step who wins Bolt or Lagat?

Chuck Norris, by 200m.
You need to define being "fit" here.
you suck friendO wrote:

being fit defined as the best athlete over the given distance being raced.

It doesn't purely become the fastest 400 guys advantage as soon as the race slows down but the person who can run the fastest 400 1200 meters into a race will not always be the person with the fastest PR. A guy like Galen would probably lose to Wheating in a race that went 4 02 even though Galen's PR is at least a second faster.
In a slower race a guy like Fleet may be able to run closer to his 400 pr than some of the other guys, but if their 400 is faster than his they don't need to be able to run as close to their PR's to beat him.
the guy who can run the fastest 400 1200 meters into the race is the most fit individual over the distance. period. for the same reason lasse viren (spelling) was still able to win in 72 after they crawled for the first 2.1 miles then blasted the last mile.
if bolt's mile capability is 4:20, and he races lagat and 3 laps into they are at 3:15, and lagat is on his shoulders, guess who is going to win? lagat. why? because he is the most fit athlete at the given distance.
whoever wins the race isn't the person with the best kick. if fleet wins, it isn't because of his kicking ability, its because hes in better shape than everyone else.
This is where you're wrong. Taking this to the extremes, if Lagat and Wariner were to "run" 1200 at 6 minute pace and then close for the last lap it would be a close race to the finish. If Lagat pushed the pace for the first 1200 then Wariner would be nowhere to be found
Pat Casey shouldn't be taken lightly, he's a serious threat in this race. He also ran 2 sub-4 minute miles in back-to-back weeks on a 200m track at altitude. I was in one of these races, and Pat was 100 meters ahead of second place. In the last 400, he could take the whole thing.
Saying that you raced him doesn't make it any more credible, he barely qualified for the final off the kick, if he were as good as you say he wouldn't have taken that chance of not qualifying by finishing so far back.. just watch the race and see how he does, after that you can talk about how good he is when we really find out.
how many get all american? is it top 8 or first 8 americans?

So he ran the slowest qualifying time. That means he didn't use as much energy. Just wait and watch. Casey should not be counted out of the competition. In Highschool, I watched him win a fast 1600, then two hours later do the 800 fast, then do the 3200. All three were pr's for him. He has endurance. Also, when he ran that mile that got him qualified, he did the 800meter not too long after, and he won that in 1:52, and it was a jog for him.
Also, to say he barely qualified is bogus. He went top 4 in his heat. He was only .19 seconds behind Jeff See, and .08 seconds behind the precious Mac Fleet. Ever think that was all he was trying to do, was just get in? Also, He was in 3rd, if you watch the video, until the last little bit, when Mac Fleet barely passed him. This is in the bag for Pat Casey. top 3 definite, and Number 1 most likely.
Everyone is nuts on this board. Emmanuel is the defending champion, yearly leader, and looked easy yesterday when he took off. He will do the same thing in the final and take off with probably 1000 to go to win easily in 4:01. There rest of the guys will jog and kick like crazy for 2nd in 4:04.
Anyone else see what I was talking about with Ulrey ducking out of the mile??? Watching that DMR last night confirms that he would have lost this race as well, and that is why he didn't run it.
Oh my... I did not realize that Emmanuel was in a league of his own. Especially by 3 seconds. I mean, Lagat won the world championships in 2007, which means he'd win them again in 2009 by your reasoning, Because he is that previous champion. Yeah, the returning champion always wins. No new guys have worked hard or have even the slightest possibility of winning. Emmanuel wins by 125 yards. Heard it here first.
Are you fu... really thinking that the LOBOS does not win? It is just ignorant and uneducated for people to really have a thought that Lee Emanuel is not the man among boys. The best Duck, Miller, Ulrey, and the Cal guys all avoided the mile because guess what, they cannot outkick Lee, period! With no Fernandez, Lee is the Class of the Field and I agree with Exactly, as that is Exactly right, FACT - Lee Emanuel repeats as NCAA Mile Champion - TONIGHT!
1. Emanuel
2. Wildcat
3-4 Ducks!!
Lee is the best runner and racer. He doesn;t get caught up tripping on guys and shoving around. Has enough confidence in his strength not just his closing speed like all the other milers in the NCAA. He will win by 2+ seconds over the last half mile. Look for AJ and Fleet to go 2-3 for valuable team points!
wow i can't believe the idiotic explanations of why he will win haha, "he won this and that in high school," seriously high school will not give testament to anything, especially winning in a state like montana where there is no competition, this is college so like i said why don't you watch the race then AFTER start your talking.. assuming he does as well as you say, if not then he still has his "high school titles"
and i'm sorry i have nothing against casey he is a fast miler and probably a good guy, but i think you people are crazy the way you explain why he will win or whatevr, just watch the race!!

Lee is the most 25 year old of the field as well. That has to help.

this doesn't even make sense haha, well you're the most stupid ass of the board as well!! which DOESN'T help your post
