Is it OK to wear School Singlet in a Road Race if you're an ALUM?

I ran Boston in my old college singlet and it was good - got attention and gave me some much needed energy from the crowd

I still have a few old college jerseys and the program (largely unknown outside of that metro area) got the axe over a decade ago. If anything, it'd appear to pretty much everyone who sees me wearing it that it's a jersey from a club of that name, rather than a school.

What about a guy like Dan Rauchenberg who has an official college singlet that he wears to races even though he never, ever ran on the team at his alma mater?

It's better that he run in the singlet he has with a picture of himself on it.

Is it still ok to wear your high school letter jacket when you go out on post-collegiate dates?

First there are far fewer pro athletes than college athletes. Having every Tom, Dick and Harry from Joggers World land wearing my college singlet in summer races...would make it harder for the NCAA to be sure athletes were following regulations.

Second, how may top college guys, former top college guys want to see every Tom, Dick and Harriet wearing a singlet they bushed their asses to EARN???

I don't like the tact that Oregon sells replica old school Oregon singlets t-shirts that then the numbskull on Runnerspace can then wear to lamely act like he is Pre.

I am willing to bet there are a bunch of guys and gals who feel the same way, that they don't want to see others who did not earn the singlet, wearing it.

I have seen tons of people run in their college t-shirts, or college "tank tops" and that satisfies them.

And that is appropriate, and that is what those shirts are for.

I don't want to see you in a singlet I worked 6 years before college, and 4 years of college to earn. (It devalues the jersey if anyone can get one.)

This is flat-out dumb, but somehow coming from "a Duck" it doesn't surprise me. The NCAA doesn't go by what a runner is wearing in a road race to decide if that runner has and should retain college eligibility. It's the name in the results and the name signed to receive a prize of meaningful value that they go by. What, like the NCAA already sends scouts to Peachtree, Bix, and Boilermaker to look for sneaky college runners trying to run in their teams' singlets?

I'm sure Tim Tebow is all bitter over all the Florida fans he sees throwing footballs in the park with their friends and kids while wearing a jersey with his name and number on it. Just makes him sick and cheapens his experience to the degree that he's been thinking about quitting the sport.

Yeah, heaven forbid that anyone should ever try to promote this sport in ways that have already proven to successfully promote other sports. We wouldn't want anyone to have that type of attachment to the sport or any of its teams.

I'm also willing to bet that you're not the only Bitterman crank around in running.

I wouldn't wear an Oregon singlet (or anything with that school's name on it), not even if you paid me.

Why not ask your coach? Unless he objects, I'd say it's fine. Who cares what a bunch of anonymous Let's Run posters think?

There is a guy in CT, has to be 60+, seems to wear his Penn singlet to every race. No disrespect, the guy motors for his age.

I ran low 14's in college. Post-collegiate I wore the shorts from my uniform with the logo. That was cool enough. I quit doing that about a year later but I still wear them on training runs.

I can't fit into my medium uniform anymore anyway. I'd hope you decide to put on some muscle and upgrade past a medium top after college running.

exactly. I see lots of people wearing college singlets in races and nobody could care less except for letsrun-type dorks. personally I haven't worn mine for the first 7 years out of college, but will probably do so for a marathon coming up. it was a big name school so i'll get some more cheering (and booing...either way it's distracting attention).

I ran next to a guy in a Nebraska singlet in one marathon and everyone was yelling for him even though i'm sure most of them had no connection to the school or state. They just see something like that and it gives them something to say other than "go go go"

Finally, like someone else was whinging about on this thread, I "earned" that singlet with a huge amount of work. Might as well enjoy it before i'm too fat and slow.

If I was a walk-on and didn't get a scholarship to run for said school, can i still wear my college singlet in the local Turkey trot?
