I'm a former Marine office. Our basic training was easier, but running demands were higher and faster times required in ROTC. It was a 9 minute per mile pace as a minimum, and believe me, several didn't even make that time. But yet, somehow, when it came time to get commissions, guess what?
Yes sir, every able-body that was passing their classes and going to graduate received commission.
The 5-star Marine Generals, fighter pilots, and women have to do 3 miles in 18 mins. Plus Marines have to be able to fight competively in an un-armed fighting skill. Head Trauman is a huge liability for Marines. Worse thatn any civilian sport, 1st responder job, or the normal military service branches (NV AR AF CG NG ROTC BP FBI CIA).

As mentioned above, if you train for the events, it is not to difficult to max out. I would say it is possible for everyone to max out if they put the work into it. For example I used to be incredibly weak. I went from not being able to do a pushup to doing 15 dead hang pullups in about 2 months.
Incorrect. Marines do situps, not crunches Shoulder blades must touch the deck, arms must be folded across the .body and remain there, forearms or elbows must touch thighs.
Still, the situps are the easiest of the 3 components of the PFT..
When I was at OCS a million years ago, maybe 10-15% of candidates would break 18 in the 3 mile, but a lot would break 19. Few were over 20..
I can see that runners are interested in times and marks.
The regular (non-USMC) military is also interested in standards such as time. As such the regulars are stunts-based and classroom-based as is commonly known. The regulars are chartered with the American tradition of respect for individuals and are very much in-sync with contemporary values, individual rights. The regulars are heavily regulated by parents, politicians, and academicians.
The United States Marine Corps is based on medieval warrior traditions, 1000s of years old. The Marines are not in-sync with American values and can never be. The Marines are an insane asylum.
Crunches are more difficult n no Kipling allowed ( whipping of back) to create whip generating forward motion.
I would guess (30 to 35) year ago, in my era, there were a higher percentage of Marines able to run sub-18 and sub-19 3 mile compared to today. Many Marines today appear built to prevail in a fight in a phone booth. Marines today appear to be lifting a lot of weights.

Service members should be strong, agile, explosive, and have endurance. Running and doing push-ups sit-ups and pull-ups won't get you all the way there.
The Army has already started addressing this with their new PT test and change towards holistic health and fitness doctrine.
This isn't the '40s anymore. The combat load as grown in weight exponentially. The physical fitness requirements to execute combat related tasks in full kit involve a lot more than just endurance.
I say get rid of the Marine 3mi or Army 2mi and replace with a 400m run or shuttle sprint.

(Former USMC mortar man here) That was about my time frame as well and I don’t know that there were all that many sub-19 guys back then. I was normally in the 18:10-18:20 range and there were usually a handful of guys ahead of me and a handful a little behind and the bulk of the unit would be people just making sure they ran fast enough to make sure they were rated as first class for cutting score purposes.
I work as a contractor in Naval aviation so still come into contact with Marines regularly and the range of body build/types seems about the same as back in the day. Then again these are airwingers so my perception could be off when it comes to the grunts.
Usually about 30% of infantry platoon in my era, sub-19 3 mile. I know Marines today are lifting more.

Maps are in meters so three mile run should be a 5K today. I had an opportunity to talk to Gunnery Sergeant Carlos Hathcock significantly over 30 years ago for a week. On more than one occasion he had to run a fast 5K or so to meet a helicopter. I would guess he was about a sub-17 guy as a young Marine. I remember him as 6'1" 160ish pounds. I'm 5'11". Hathcock was taller than I am.
