53 Pilot, I'm afraid to disagree, your generalization is a common mistake. I'm a Sailor who works closely with Marines, and yes in some administrative positions, they MAY have the time to train, but in many other positions they don't, also, it was my personal experience that although most of the leadership loves a winner, Marine leaders tend to prefer and support combat related sports, boxing, wrestling, etc. If you watch TOP GUN you may think all pilots do is hotdog, ride motorcycles and chase a woman around, we in the military know that it is not so glamorous, (except for the chase women part). By your sign on name you should know the long hours pilots face throughout their careers, on a personal note, he was a Drill Instructor, working 17 hour days, revolving his training into the late night, a single father for most of his running career, he was also the the first Marine to win Marine Corps Marathon, and place high in others. He qualified his first time out in 2:17 and had only started running once he joined and seriously training at age 24.
