I agree. Just because the map says one thing...doesn't mean the course could not have been a bit short or compromised a bit. But this is XC, not track. I guess course records mean something, but to be honest this post gets to the point. He absolutely dominated a field with a ton of guys who are national caliber runners. Rupp is looking unstoppable right now. Goes to show you what an Olympic runner can do against lesser comp. It is pretty amazing since some of these guys are 28:20-28:40 guys on the track and they were not able to stay within 50 seconds of him. I guess this makes you realize how good guys like Bekele, Tergat, and Geb are. Becuase they can absolutely dominate a guy like Rupp. Kind of crazy.

That doesn't prove all that much. Generally the top couple guys at nationals are a ways ahead of the 8-10 guys. We all know that Rupp is going to be right up at the front at Nationals and this result doesn't make him any more of a favorite.

When I heard 27:50 right away I thought short course. But he had a 50m lead after 2 minutes and an 80-100m lead after 4 minutes and reportedly split 22:10 or so for 8k, which is on pace for 27:45-50 for 10k.
He is now the favorite over Chelanga.
22:10 for 8K? Right, like we said, another short course. He and Chelanga will be good.
if rupp running sub 28 on grass is legit, than i am elton john. I might be willing to believe this if its nice weather nationals and I see him go through 8k in 22:30. And even then its a big maybe. I agree that this course is about 1 minute short. Remember Ritz and Webb's freshman year of college, nationals was on that pancake flat golf course and the winner smoked a 28:45 or so.
How the hell is Rupp going to pull second place THIS time?
It looks like Rupp has made the jump up to the next level of fitness. I think there is just 1 person who can beat him at nationals..himself. Aberto has done a great job getting him ready
Seriously though, how can they be that far short on the distance. I can see a course being 30 second or so short, but they were almost 2 minutes short..that's lame.

Stanford course is definitely short, before the race we guestimated about 200m afterwards I would say more like 400m.
Wow Rupp "won" the qualifying race, the same way he "won" the 5k qualification at the trials.
But I don't quite remember, what place did he get in the final?

Rupp is right where I'd expect him to be. Some people seem to lack some context for his accomplishments. His Olympic 10,000 was the fastest ever by an American. Next to Bekele's win this year, I'd say the previous greatest 10,000 performance was when Lasse Virén fell in the 1972 race, only to get up, catch the field, and win in world record time of 27:38.
An American college kid running a time that would have been good enough for not only gold but a world record in 1972, and top ten in any other year, is clearly in a different league than anyone else in the NCAA right now. The fact that Rupp was in the most competitive 10,000 in Olympic history should not take away from his performance. With a PR only 20 seconds off the American record, he should have a decent chance of breaking that next summer.
