I saw those races in England (in Wimbledon) and they were like a 'who's who' of super elite British athletes racing on the roads. Those were the days, when a lot of clubs had National and even World class runners. Everyone would turn out.
I was always impressed by the Northern runners in those days - my heroes were guys like Dave Slater (Skyrac), Keith Angus (Sheffield), Graham Ellis (Holmfirth), Steve Kenyon (Bolton), Mike Freary (Bolton), Gerry Helme (Leigh), Steve Anders (Stretford), Karl Harrison (Stretford), and a bunch of others, too numerous to mention. John Temperton, was another great athlete, especially on the roads. All those lads were solid athletes who put the miles in, and raced their hearts out, mostly on a weekly basis.
I remember sitting on a train after the AAA 10,000, and finding a seat next to Dave Slater. Those guys were top class runnners, but their attitude and demeanor was nothing like that which is typical of Premier League soccer players.
Some of those lads from the North were ordinary blokes who worked in factories (Dave Slater), or were teachers (Angus), and they always managed to fit their training around their jobs. Slater used to run a 5-6 mile run every morning before clocking into his factory at 7.30am. Southern runners were good too - but I always got the impression that the Northern runners epitomized the really tough runners - working class, and tough as nails.
Those were the days, and it is sad to realize that we will never see days like that again.
