Worst cities ever?

They aren't. Those cities are brimming with culture. But if you are average American scum, culture doesn't mean a thing to you.

San Diego doesnt pay anywhere near Maryland which makes the cost of living very high. Real estate totally over valued. Baltimore County has some great areas.

The problem with Atlanta is that there aren't many good places to run in any one area, and if you don't live in that area, you're facing long drives to get there. When I first moved to ATL, without even realizing it, I moved within a mile of the Chattahoochee trails. That was great, but if you want variety, you run out of places pretty quickly or have to drive a lot.As much as I like to run in trails and parks, my favorite type of city to run in tends more toward the medium-small town with a lot of streets, sidewalks and country roads that are relatively safe to run on. The type of place where almost no matter what part of town you live in, you can create multiple routes going in almost any direction. I think a lot of small/medium college towns are like that.Anyway, back to ATL, I do agree that besides the traffic and the running situation (which is far from all bad), there's a lot of cool things about living in Atlanta. A lot of interesting areas and things to do ... plus if you have a lot of friends, any place is cooler. I left behind a lot of cool friends when I moved.

Well, Flint can be depressing, but if you look at it from just the right angle and maybe squint a little, it's not so bad. Plus, they put on a great road race with phenomenal community support. That should count for something.

Lima, OH, is my personal nominee for worst city. I haven't spent any time there, but it sure looks awful from the road. Maybe someone who's from there can weigh in and correct me...

Maybe I should have formatted my post differently. I was saying that those were all the cities I've lived in or visited for enough time to form an opinion, and out of those, New York was my least favorite.

I've also visited LA, San Diego, Portland, Philadelphia, New Orleans and others, but haven't spent enough time there to really comment.

Well, many things. Sprawl saps away natural resources, increasing the need for driving and more roads. Building more roads does nothing to ease traffic as people will increase their driving habits until it becomes unbearable. Also, by everyone being spread out, the sense of community and culture is vastly diminished. Kids spend their time indoors watching television and playing computer games instead of interacting socially. The number of fatal auto accidents in suburbia is huge, thousands every day. Yet, this is the only mass killing that we accept as part of the norm somehow.

I would suggest reading this book. You don't have to agree with everything it says, but it is well researched and brings up some important points. I grew up in the suburbs, but it has some serious problems.

I've had a great time every time I've visited and have never heard bad things. Is your mom named Sydney.... and you weren't hugged enough as a child?

I'd like to throw another vote in for fayetteville,NC. Also one for Gary, In.

Live in the suburbs of Boston these days, not a big fan of the area, will move when the step-son graduates HS, only 6 long years to go.

Kind of like Manhattan, lot's to do, Inlaws have an apartment there so i go there a couple of times a year, not sure i would want to live there, running would be tough after a while, Central Park tends to get smaller with each run.

Lived in the DC area for a few years, has some bad areas along with some great areas, place it way ahead of Boston.

Lived in Boulder for almost 10 years, Colorado in general is great, maybe not so for Pueblo and some of the Denver suburbs, lot's of development.

I was in a central Californa town called Los Banos, which means "The Baths," which made me feel like I'd like to take a bath.

All of the north east ohio cities. Cleveland, Akron, Canton, and Youngstown. Also Detroit. Just go there and you will see why. Youngstown is the worst

I was gonna put Lenoir, but decided against it at the last minute. Now that you mention it though, Lenoir is pretty awful.
