Lawrence of Arabia has gotta be in that top 10 somewhere.

Forrest Gump gets my vote for the best crafted storyline of any movie. It has everything: happiness, sadness, comedy, action, drama, great acting, unforgettable characters, very quotable, original.
This is actually a great criteria to use. Either that or being so one of a kind or groundbreaking in nature that it has to be on the list. I went down the top 100 list and pulled out the ones that I thought really met the criteria then added a couple not on then tried to trim it down to 10. I have to see Sawshank again. I've only seen it once and all I can remember is the disturbing scene of the guy getting attacked in jail. It doesn't make my top 13 for now.
In no particular order, my top 13(that's all I could knock it down to) are:
TOP 13 MOVIES OF ALL TIME:
The Godfather
Casablanca
Lawrence of Arabia
Star Wars
It's a Wonderful Life
Jaws
Rocky
American Graffiti
The Silence of the Lambs
Forrest Gump
Goodfellas
Seven (my actual all time favourite)
The Good, Bad and the Ugly
IF I was flipping around and came to anyone of these I would stop looking.
Forrest Gump is extremely well crafted. I think another very unique story is The Deer Hunter. The title is so misleading haha even though it does have relevance to the movie though. But Casablanca is my all time favorite.

You'll appreciate Braveheart less when you realize that it's a total ripoff of Spartacus.
I always thought it & Gladiator were both ripoffs. I think Robin Hood Prince of Thieves is much better than both.
Forest Gump really is great. It makes you think and is very moving. Before I saw Casablanca I wasn't expecting it to be that good but it is very well done. Bogart is very convincing in that role. I think I saw Deerhunter a long time ago and it's fuzzy; gotta see that one again.
Funny how very few comedies are on anyones lists.

mainly cause a lot of comedies now and days follow the same code/routine. Also Deer Hunter's the one where Christopher Walken and Al Pacino get into a Russian Roulette match.
Forrest Gump is a very well crafted film, perhaps a little too heavy on the product placement (James Bond style) to be a world greatest...
Arguably, the storyline is product-placement-based sort of like cast-away or what women want with Gibson.
Again, not good or bad. Just is. Maybe that's not enought ot make it a "greatest"...
forrest gump is a 2.5 hour cliche.
and i would call it well polished, but not very well crafted.
anything with tom hanks in it is bound to be above average at best- the guy refuses to take any risks with roles or films. consequently, everything he does is "safe". and every role he plays is "tom hanks as..." instead of "forrest gump as played by..."
1) Memento
2) This is Spinal Tap

Al Pacino's not in that movie. Are you thinking of Robert DeNiro? Deer Hunter's also the one (or many) where Meryl Streep is absolutely smokin' hot!

By "Billy Mills Story", are you referring to Running Brave? Or is there another movie about Billy Mills?
The Lion King
This is an age old debate, but I still love getting in it..
It's such a hard question to truly ask because the genre's of movies are so different. I skipped about 3 pages of responses, so here would be my list.
1. Saving Private Ryan - not only is it the most realistic battle movie, but it has great dialogue, excellent acting, and the story itself is amazing. The brotherhood of soldiers fighting the inevitablity of death and why they do it... man, its soo good. I would actually clump Band of Brothers in as a movie if I could, and I would make that first, but mini-series don't count right?
2. Schindler's List - I don't know how anyone can watch this movie without leaving the theatre a slightly different person.
3. GodFather II - Its easily the best of the godfathers and the directing, acting, and story are amazing.
4. Platoon - Simply amazing. Great acting by everyone in that flick, even charlie sheen which is a suprise.
5. Seven - probably the last movie I was actually scared watching. It's the definition of thriller.
Army of Darkness
Thread over.

Yea sorry about that. I always think of Pacino when I think of DeNiro and vice versa. And yes Streep is smoking hot.

True about Seven...how many movies does Spacey do where theres a crazy twist/ending. K-Pax, The Usual Suspects, Seven...crazy fool.
My vote goes to scent of a woman.
i don't know if it was mentioned but Match Point was brilliant
Drama: Schindler's List; All about Eve; Godfather; Shawshank; Amadeus
Sheer Entertainment: Raiders of the Lost Ark; Pirates 1; Speed; The Sting
Suspense: Silence of the Lambs
Musical: The Sound of Music; My Fair Lady
Foreign: Jean de Florette/Manon of the Spring; Babette's Feast; Water
Art Film: Howards End; A Room with a View; Age of Innocence
Animated: too many
Comedy: Princess Bride; Some Like It Hot
Romantic Comedy: Roman Holiday; When Harry Met Sally; Sleepless in Seattle
Film Noir: Blue Velvet; Pulp Fiction
Western: Unforgiven
Fantasy: Lord of the Rings series
Sci-Fi: Alien, Star Wars series
Sports: Chariots of Fire; Million Dollar Baby; Rocky
Lots of good stuff out there!
Raging Bull is my all time favorite. The dialogue is funny as hell. My favorite line..."You punch like you take it up the ass."
But I think the greatest movie of all time...hard but I think in the next 20-30 years AFI will rate Saving Private Ryan as the number one. Most the higher ranked movies are rated as high as they are partly because of their age.
