It really depends on the distance. I have found that the better male middle distance runners are doing very well for themselves. It probably has something to do with the infusion of testosterone they receive in the womb. The same thing that makes them powerful and aggressive athletes, gives them beneficial equipment. I have yet to be disappointed by a guy who runs races shorter than 5000m. That's when they start to get a little, um, little.

adidas shorts have the worst liners. When sizing, not only look at the fit and elastic. Feel the liner material & look for softness. I find Nike & asics have the best fit & silk-like feel.

Back in the old days, we used to wear jock straps. I can only assume those days are long past.
It can be an embarrasing problem for those of us that are....uhm...on the large size, if you know what I mean.
my junk definitely shrinks as one or more posters noted. the soaking wet outline that sometime results, especially in this heat, can be a bit well, i don't like to be near children, but they cry at my short shorted appearance as is.
briefs would not solve this problem entirely, but certainly improve it. as others mentioned though, the heat would get me.
once the liners start to go on my shorts, i just keep them around as shorts to sleep and hang out in.
as for adidas, i think one of the pairs i have is women's and while i think the liner is finally beginning to lose it a little, they are otherwise great. my men's shorts from them are a little more suspect.
finally, regarding package size to distance specialization, there might be some good truth to that, but i have certainly see plenty of outliers. i'd have said i was mile-5k guy (best suited right in the middle) and my jewels landed in about the same place. i knew guys on both ends of the spectrum with inferior endowments. so it goes.
I end up with holes in the crotch of my shorts and briefs, don't really know why. Briefs are cheaper, therefore I wear them with running shorts and put holes in them instead of the shorts.
Comfort-wise, it doesn't make a difference to me either way, maybe just the liner is more comfortable.
Another easy way to avoid chafing is to use a penis health creme. I use one called Man1 Man Oil. It contains Vitamin E and shea butter, which form a protective barrier upon the skin which prevents it from becoming chafed and irritated. I only wish I had discovered it years ago. You have no idea how many chafing episodes I have dealt with over the years.... not pleasant.
I always wear a pair of short denim cut offs underneath my running shorts.

I had an adult tip snip and it is still sensitive so i wear underwear so it doesnt slid around and hurt

I used to wear compression 2-in-1 shorts with a pair of synthetic pants underneath (because sometimes the seam of the compression short would run). But now I'm on to just wearing reasonably tight fitting synthetic pants under lightweight football shorts.
You still get that nice feeling of everything being held comfortably in place but it's a much lighter airier setup that with the 2-in-1s.
I would recommend it to any underpant wearing fans.

Depends on the shorts and the state of their built in. I find the Saxx shorts are particularly comfortable without underwear, and most with built-in are fine without, until they start to fall apart. But if the lining is not comfortable, or not there, or falling apart running briefs are comfortable and cheap

About 15 years ago, I got tired of liners that were chafing, too tight, or too loose. Or, the liners would wear out before the shorts. I thought, "Why not just cut the offending liner out of the shorts and wear briefs made specifically for running?"
Back then, I was limited to Asics and a couple of other brands of running briefs. Today, many performance briefs and boxer briefs exist. In summer, I wear mostly Asics or an off-brand of wicking fabric briefs... looking up the brand now... Papi. In winter, I wear boxer briefs, especially Puma, RBX, and Spyder. I've tried several brands, but those are my favorites. You can get a 4-pack of performance boxer briefs at TJ Maxx for $12.99 so it's easy to try lots of options. When I find a brief I really like, I go back and buy 10-12 pair. It sounds like a lot, but yesterday I ran, changed clothes, worked out for nearly two hours, changed clothes, and then ran some errands. That's three changes of underwear.
Since the liners wear out before the shorts, this extends the life of the shorts and gives me the fit I want regardless of which pair of shorts I wear. It also gives me the flexibility to buy shorts without a built-in liner or to buy shorts that I really like but the liner doesn't fit.
When I buy a new pair of running shorts, the first thing I do is cut out the liner. Just be careful not to cut out the key pocket.
