Nice spreadsheet Malmo. Hall averaged 14:09 per 5k in that half.

I never got this "solo" thing that pops up here as if it's a detriment to fast running. It's not. Running solo is one of the easiest ways to run fast times. The athlete gets completely relaxed and "into the zone" when solo.
I never understood it either. Some of Geb's road records were solo and Bekele's 10000 WR was 50% solo.
A spectacular run. Don't really see the value in comparing it to other US performances, but either way, it's up there. Track and road are different animals, and I can't think of a road performance by an American that comes close.
Forget the marathon, forget the Olympic trials, forget the 10,000 meters--indeed, don't even think of them. I don't fully understand why after a great achievement we are in such a hurry to project into the future or to compare the achievement to something or someone else. The performance stands by itself as worthy of deep and long lasting congratulations.

Thanks. I call it the "PaceMeister"
Will this race be televised in the next few weeks?
You are right up to a point, but since the half is a RELATIVELY seldom-run distance, at least by the elites, it is nice to reference the more common distances for perspective, especially in what is such a monumental breakthrough performance. Hall's run benefits from such a comparison, rather than being at all discounted.
Certainly it gives pause to all of the other young elites in their respective pursuits. A new bar has been set.
confirmed by the iaaf website!!

Yes. It will be replacing halftime at the Superbowl this year, thanks to GoDaddy.

I was a timer on the course. Ryan Hall was ~30 sec ahead of Meb's pack early, and he was flying. I didn't think he'd hang on to that lead, but he did! Great performance!

Can you imagine Ryan Hall and Janet Jackson on the same podium? I can't even picture them in the same zip code.

Probably broke his own 20-K record, but no chip mat or timers at 20-K. We approximatd 57:06, but it was hard to see back that from from the truck.
David Monti, Race Results Weekly
It's physically impossible that he DIDN'T break the 20K. He would have had to run the last 1.1K in under 2 minutes. Too bad there was no mat, now a national record will have a huge asterisk. I mean, it's fine for now, but what about when someone runs a 57:10 20K?
Oh well, good problem to have.
This time is absolutely mind boggling. I feel so happy for Ryan. He must have known exactly what he was capable of since he went out so fast. ! I'd like to know what this guy has been doing for training. Sheese.
Whatever Hall decides to do, I think he'll do it well. He ran something like 13:14 in 2005, and I don't think he was in sub 60 shape then. I wouldn't be surprised if this guy runs 12:55 and sub 27:00 this summer. Coming through 10k in low 28 is rediculous.
Anyway, the 59:42 is the best performance by an American in a long, long time. I hope Ryan savors it.
Congrats
Fasil Bizuneh is an american who is originally from Ethiopia or of ethiopian decent.
Ryan Hall, can someone provide his PB's at 5k and 10k..wow that is a great achievement.
Vipam, you missed one.

Great job!
On the website it says 59:43 as the official time.
