Are we watching track or a freaking smut broadcast. I literally got reemed by my wife and grandmother today while watching. They were screaming, “why are they dressed like that”, “this is a disgrace, your children are watching”.
Somebody needs to petition that get these gals to cover up their a** and chest.
I'm actually surprised that more women runners aren't offended by the sexualization of the gear. ...
Track and field athletes are mostly narcissistic exhibitionists so that is no surprise.
I have seen the line pushed for years. We have gone from shorts to panties to now some function more like a thong. 5 steps into a race and the whole thing is up their crack with near full exposure. As a woman I feel so bad for them. How in the world can you focus on your race in a packed stadium with your whole behind showing and an atomic wedgie? I really don’t get why anyone would choose that situation for an important performance. I guess I am old, but even in high school I would have hated this and might not have run track at all if wearing something like this was a requirement. In 10 years time women are going to be just toeing the line naked.
I didn't like gym knickers because I felt you couldn't do a proper range of warm-up stretches or dynamic stretches in them without revealing way too much and much preferred the cycling shorts (what you call boy shorts, similar to Faith Kipyegon's pair).
Wearing a thong in a race would be distracting. And yeah if it was for performance men would be wearing them too. Thankfully, they don't.
I posted something earlier about a well known long jumper and her instagram is full of photos of her with the 'knickers' on. so i think for some it is about self-promotion etc.
for some reason my post about the jumper (was just a reference to her, no specific comments made) got deleted but the post i was replying to stayed?
There are a couple cultural forces at play in this discussion.
Rising religious conservatism and sexual repression: OP is morally offended by the sight of non-nude female bodies.
Economic pressure: Athletes rely on sponsorships which depend on social media engagement. Wearing skimpy kit might occasionally be motivated by this.
But on the whole, it's motivated by performance. Less fabric = lighter and less resistance to movement. The argument that it can't be performance-motivated because men don't do it simply doesn't fly since men's bodies are different. There would be penises flying around. In fact, such incidents have happened, which tells you they're kind of at the limit on the men's side too.
The women who thong it are doing it for clicks/potential money.
Less weight doesn't make them faster. That little bit of weight is offset by compression and aero gains from ideal wind tunnel coverage analysis that they could have.
The more exposure they have probably gives them more money to train with. Decisions decisions.
In triathlon and cycling they are covering more skin with skin suits. The skin suits can be pretty revealing too so maybe that will be the next thing.

You’re taking the OP far too seriously. A lot was sarc/humor.

Maybe. But there are a lot of people who actually think this way (Incels. Christians, etc).
I've always wondered about the crowds at places like Doha. Do they find it completely outrageous/distasteful/disgusting to see female athletes walking around and running in tiny sports bras and essentially knickers? It must be a massive shock compared to what they're used to seeing women wear. I mean Qatar has a mixture of Sharia and civil law.
"In 2014, a modesty campaign was launched to remind tourists of the country's restrictive dress code. Female tourists were advised not to wear leggings, miniskirts, sleeveless dresses, or short or tight clothing in public. Men were warned against wearing shorts and singlets."
What the athletes wear is a very extreme version of this. If going sleeveless isn't OK then how on earth are the competitive outfits perceived?

I don't think this happened. Troll alert. When someone writes, "literally," to emphasize something happening, it means it didn't happen, typically. And anyway, why would both a wife and a grandmother ream out a person viewing, the person viewing did not enforce women to wear bikini bottoms. Strange post. Doesn't make sense.
Maybe the fashion thing would be to have multiple outfits with matching shoes so their fans can comment on the different looks. Women like to comment on other women's clothing.

The love it. Incidental to their love of athletics they "unfortunately" see some skin.
It's like a certain beauty pageant owner having to inspect the changing areas for "reasons".
When I watch a woman’s race it’s for the totally different/refreshing race dynamics compared to men’s racing… Not salivating like a Pavlovian pervert over their clothing…
This thread is weird.
I am a woman watching women’s track because I love the sport. It is hard not to empathize with someone trying to run a race with a huge wedgie. It is odd that this is even a thing given all of the options for shorts that look nice but stay put. I see female athletes constantly tugging their bikini bottom shorts out if their crack, and wonder how in the world anyone thought that was a good option for women trying to perform at their best.
I hear the argument that it is the athlete’s choice. Maybe it mostly is. I have a strong suspicion that the prevalence of eating disorders in the female track and field community is not unrelated to it now being considered normal to race in a string bikini. It is darn near the “naked in a crowded stadium” nightmare. That so many female track athletes have eating disorders could suggest that not everyone wearing these is super psyched about it.
